Factory ammo for BC
« on: December 19, 2008, 03:18:25 AM »
I'll be heading over to Cabela's to pick up a few boxes of 45-70 for my new gun and head to the range on Saturday.
I know each gun will have different preferences, but what have you guys had the most luck with as far as factory loads in the BC?

I plan to start handloading for this round, but it might be a few weeks before i get dies and components.

The only factory ammo that I have used in my BC is the Black Hills Cowboy ammo. It is a 405 gr bullet and it was a pretty load for me to get started. I took all of the Factory brass and that is how I started pressing my own loads. I am now running Black Powder loads and am really enjoying it.. Congrats and good luck..

I've had the best accuracy in my BC using Winchesters Supreme 300gr. Partition Gold. It's pricey, but accurate.

I just stopped by Cabela's and got a box of each:

Remington 405gr SP
Hornaday 325 Leverevolution
Ultramax 405 RNFP  - i've shot their 45LC 250gr. me and the SAA clone both prefer these to any other.  hope their rifle ammo is just as good!

I should be going to the range in the morning.  I'll post a report after I get to shoot my new baby!

Those remmy green box 405s have been a steady performer in all of my .45-70s, But I only shoot reloads now.

None of my 5 45-70s like the Leverevolution ammo.
The best one is my 1886 Win which will do about 3" at 100.
All 3 H&Es, my Win 1886 & my Win 1885 Highwall all seem to do good with factory Win 300JHPs.
The 22" Handi is the best at just under 1" and one of the BCs is the worst at just over 2.25".

I've heard mixed reviews on the leverevolutions, but they're cheaper than the remingtons by a couple of bucks, so I'll give them one box to prove themselves on way or the other.
after christmas, i'm going to pull my reloading equipment out of storage and try my hand at the rifle cartridge.
many moons ago i reloaded some 45LCs for my SAA clone.  Hopefully the 45-70 wont be any more challenging.

Same for me.  The green box remmy 405's shot great out of my BC, then I used the brass and loaded up a bunch of 405 rem's to try and match the green box load.  My load clock a few more fps on the chrono but they shoot good.

Like mgunslinger the only factory load fired in mine was the Black Hills CAS ammo. Very accurate and didn't kick like the higher powered stuff but has plenty of punch to take game. I've heard pretty much only good on the Remington ammo as well. I suspect those two would do all I'd ever ask of a .45-70. My shoulder won't take more than that anyway. These days it's getting so bad that it just can't deal with recoil.
