45/70 Trail Boss loads
« on: December 19, 2008, 09:57:54 AM »
I am going to reload some 45/70 cases. I decided to try some of IMR's Trail Boss powder. I am using a 405 gr, lead round nose/flat point bullet.
I have bought a lot of the cowboy rounds in the past. They are good 200 yd and under rounds, 1150 fps at the muzzle. They are fun rounds. I would not be concerned using them for deer, but that is another discussion.
All of the reload data I have found says anywhere from 12-14.4 grs of powder. Does anyone have any experience with this powder, in a 45/70? Thanks.

Ya I've done the TB loads for my 45/70 and to be honest I was not at all impressed , the groups were not up to my standards at all and neither were the speeds , most were a full 100 fps slower than what was listed in the books and in some loads even more .

I switched back to 14 grains of Unique and have not been sorry at all , I get more consistent speeds and better groups at both 100 and 200 yards .

I have found a great use for the TB though , my 45 LC .  ;D
