Ammo
« on: December 19, 2008, 02:52:51 PM »
There's a bidness called Fox Ind. . They make balls for grinding things . The ones for grinding coal are 42.8mm (1.680") which should suck air on a 1.750 GB gun/mortar .

There are many other sizes availble some in fractional sizes only , which are cheaper than the chrome plated mm balls (42.8mm) .

There is no minimum !  For 42.8 mm balls it costs $ 1.50 per ball . After my order there should be at least 50 more avalibale .

Talk to Ken , he said he'd like the cannon ball bidness . He's a Civil War buff to boot .

Yep bowderlized...man I haven't heard that term in years.

Rocklock the word you are looking for is windage.

The other word your were typing is on the banned word list.   Well maybe not banned, just unacceptable.  Apparently one of the other forums on GBO must have had someone using the word to be abusive and it got put on the banned word list. GB is pretty strict about such things, he wants the board to be a family board.

Prefer IPA myself.

Is there a website for Fox grinding balls.

Bowlderization is an eponym.  Eponym is my new word for today.  Interestingly, eponym contains a noun, "pony" meaning young equine.

My brain is telling me it is about done for the day.

Back when I worked for a living our generating plant used ball mills to pulverize the coal before being blown into the boiler. These balls were 16" in diameter. Periodically the balls were checked for diameter. When they were down to 15" they threw another one. They had sort of a thing for guys that were getting married. They had one ball fitted with a chain and lock. At his party they locked the chain around his ankle. And gave one of the bar maids the key. Supposedly when the bar closed and everyone went home she'd unlock the lock and call a cab so the poor guy could go home. It kinda ended abruptly when one guy who was so encumbered
picked the ball up, went out into the parking lot and threatened the ringleader by hoisting up this ball, putting it on the hood of his wife's new car. The next step was the windshield. The lock was undone and the party continued. Said they had never seen one guy pick up one of the balls by himself. They weighed about 160lbs. Frank

Wow, Socialble Security eligible, 11 months more to go for me...Does medicare cover burns from shooting cannons. Do powder suppliers offer Senior Citizen discounts?

I'll add that link to Fox Industries to the resource list.  RocklockI did you ask Ken if he wanted to sponsor the Cannon board?

Be forwarned folks if you shoot steel you should guage every round before you load them.  You will have be fastidious in cleaning between shoots so you don't jam a round in your bore.  Also be aware steel shot will bounce so watch you back ground.

I wonder if that company could make, say, 9.8-inch solid aluminum balls?  That's be about right for the 10-in. mortar.

Yo Ron: Good to know I'm not alone. The Depression; '39 Worlds Fair; WWII Movietone news reels; Harry "The Buck Stops Here" Truman. Remember when the gravy on the mashed potatoes was our meat for dinner and everyone went to church on Sunday and the tavern didn't have the TV that killed the art of conversation and everyone knew how to spell correctly. Today they don't even use their spell-check. Everyone is in a hurry. My accountant just told me that we are getting a 5+% increase in SS this year. Sure! Double D gets in on it when it's good. Now I can build my new cannon for our next calendar.  ;)

John,

Why don't you have a mould made. Several of out sponsors can build you a mould. There is (was) an Aluminum foundry over in Winchester who was going to pour for me.  What they were going to do was pour a round ball at the end of the day with the left overs in the bottom of the pot grom there other castings. I think I found them in the phone book or maybe it was Google.

Thanks, probably will have to break down and do it one of these days.  Meanwhile I'll keep real close track of the two original shells I'll be firing, they should last for quite a few shots as long as they don't get lost.  Thinking of putting some kinda radio transmitter in them. like one of those wild animal tracking collars they use on the nature shows on TV.

That Fox Industries web page is not much good for cannon shot buyers.  It's more for glitzy advertising lovers.

Their phone number is probably of more use.  888-794-5051

Yes just call and talk to Ken . He's a buff himself and is most helpfull .

I did not ask if he wanted to sponser the board ,but he did say "spread the word" . He took my CC order right over the phone.T
