New Leupold Rifleman?
« on: August 18, 2003, 02:06:54 PM »
I was in Wally World the other day and noticed a new Leupold scope I had never seen before.  It was a 3-9x matte scope called the Leupold Rifleman.  Has anyone tried one of these?  Are they supposed to be better than the new VXI?  Maybe someone on here with better connections than I have could test out some of these and give us a report.
The intruder turns around slowly, sees both barrels, and hears a low-deep voice say "Son, the left one's iron and the right one's steel, if the left one don't get you, the right one will"

Here is the scoop on the new Rifleman.  It is the same scope as the old Vari-X II except in Matte Finish.  It has magnesium fluoride coating on all lenses and 1/2 MOA Friction Adjustment (according to Leupold) and offers 82% light transmission.  The VX-I this year has been upgraded to feature 1/4 MOA friction adjustment (according to Leupold) and Multicoat 4 on external lenses and magnesium fluoride on internal lenses which offers 86% light transmission.  As for quality, if you have seen or looked thru a old Vari-X II, than you have seen or looked thru a Rifleman.  The VX-I is a better scope than the Rifleman.  Actually, now, the only difference between the VX-I and VX-II is the "click" adjustments.  Optically they are the same.

It kinda sounds like the Leupold "Rifleman" is "a poor man's Leupold."  :)

From Jon's remarks, it appears, at least on paper, that the Elite 3200 is superior to the Rifleman.  I would think that the Elite 3200 is more closely comparable to the VX-II.

I would agree with Zachary.  The Elite 3200 is going to be a much better scope and it is cheaper.

I agree, the 3200 are as good if not better than a VX2. I own both and really can't discern much of a dif in optical quality. Time will tell which one is more rugged.
