357 Max Brass
« on: December 19, 2008, 11:08:13 PM »
I have not been on the site as much lately as in the past so forgive me if this has already been covered. A while back you could not get brass for the 357 Max and the rumor was it was not going to be made any more. Evidently the rumors were false - you can buy it now in places where you could not just a few months ago. A GBO sponsor - Mid South Shooters Supply has it at $57 for a 250 count bag. The good thing about it was - it made me get off my a** and finally ream my 357 to the max and ordered a large supply of brass for it too. ;D

I also found this site that sells .357 Maximum if you don't reload.
http://www.bullseyeshootingsupplies.com/default.aspx

I haven't started to reload yet, but I'm going to in the near future, so right now I'm weighing all my options.

My rifle shoots really well not being reamed, and I've picked up some Buffalo Bore in 180 grain hard cast, and haven't shot them yet, but if they shoot as good as they say, I may put off reaming to max all together.
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

I just got my PTG .357 Max reamer from Midway. I have a .357 Mag barrel that shoots really well (around 1.5" @ 100 w/irons), but I'd like a little more power/range for deer.

It seems to be the perfect balance of power to recoil in a light carbine for woods hunting.

Also bought 500 peices of brass.  ;D

After I do the handi, I'm thinking about rebarreling my Ruger No.3 with a half round/half octagon in .357 Max. It just seems to heavy a gun for .22 Hornet.

The prices at Bullseye seem reasonable.  I didn't look as far as their shipping charges.  I've got a .357 Handi that's a tack driver and I'm debating about getting it reamed to Max.  I'd hate to screw it up, so I'm thinking of just getting another barrel, frame and stock set and reaming that one.  I don't want to swap frames with my mag, and I want SB2s on both of them.  That's why I don't want to buy the complete rifle with the new SB1 frame. I've read that others have done the conversion and all three, .38, Mag. and Max shoot fine.  Any experience or opinions out there?

petemi - Mine shot better after I reamed it to 357 Max. I would hesitate to ream a 357 that shot as well as yours, however. I think I would go the extra barrel route if I were you.

Thanks, that's the way I'm leaning.  Why run the risk of messing up an excellent thing.  I'll just get another barrel, see how it shoots the mags.  Compare the two, and ream the lesser of the two.  I doubt the new one will outshine the one I've got.
