Mountain Rifle
« on: December 20, 2008, 08:52:50 AM »
I recently traded for a .243 Model 700 Mountain Rifle with Leupold Vari-X II . I was wondering if anyone had any experiences with these and what type of factory ammo usually shoots well out of them. I beleive the gun itself was made in 1989. What would the value of this set up be? It's in good shape.

A couple years ago I bought a Rem 700 Mtn rifle in 243 Win from Gander Mtn.  Mine is a limited run for Gander that features a black synthetic stock, which isn't a regular catalog item.  The best part was I got it from the clearance rack for ... $350.  And, Rem had a $50 rebate going on, so I got it for about $300 once the smoke cleared.

This model has the worst trigger of seven model 700's that I own.  It will most likely get an aftermarket trigger some day.

Accuracy of mine is about 0.75 inch for five shots at 100 yards.  I shoot an 80 grain Berger varmint bullet load made for my Weatherby Varmintmaster.  So, I'd suggest trying factory ammo that weights around 80 grains.

Thanks for the info. This gun has had trigger work done, It's really smooth without any noticable creep. I picked it up for the purpose of tunring it over to my son who will be 12 years old next hunting season. Right now I'm planning on using Federal 100gr partitions for deer next season.
