Sheet rock works better for the purpose.  Make sa slight puff of dust when hit and makes good visable hole.  It also make a better medium of which to cut figures for targets.  For the size and price I willprobably just buy a few sheets.

Hummm... Southern Oregon Coast to Northern Central Montana, a bit of a stretch, like a 2 day drive, but, by then, you never know! BoomLover

Dan , Your gas costs more . This is true ....but we also drive 2+ hours into the hinderlands of wind and dust to shoot . So it's fair  ;D.

That pretty well sums up my global energy policy ....sorry  :D .  It's down to $1.63 for mid grade.

us $  1,63 per gallon ??    ooohh thats cheap .

here we pay 11 swedish crowns per liter ( almost $ 1,5 )
just a little while ago we payed $2 per liter (15 crowns)
I think its approximately 3,5 liter to a gallon .

so if my calculation is correct we pay approximately $ 5 for one gallon of gas .
and now we think thats cheap   ;D ;D
top price we had was approximately $ 7 per gallon .

I wouldnt drive a toyota if we had your gas prices   ;D ;D

on top of that we have a 50% +  income tax .
the car tax (road tax) is based on the weight of the car ,
the average is approximately $ 650 - 700 per year .

so compared to sweden I think usa is a wounderful country  ;D ;D
then I havent even mentioned the swedish gun laws  ::)

so even if I lived in the soutern california I would still go to DD:s cannon shot .

That means it's expensive for your drive to the coast, then from NY to Montana gas will be cheap!  Come on down!   ;D

I was going to run over to Ft. Benton tomorrow and look for Mike And Tracy's cannons.  Found the website for the Museum and found out it's closed in the winter.

Looking at that website it looks like it might make a good stop when you come to our area to visit.

So who is coming and what are you bringing to shoot.

Mike and Tracy from Co and Monstre
Rocklock and his Dom gun
I hope Blaster Bob and one of many mortars
Tropico with mortars and swivel
George and his howitzer and BB mortar.
Possibly a very famous and well known personality and one of the founding fathers from the western fringe of Old Dominion
MikeR C, what do you shoot Mike?
Cannonmaker with one of his fabulous creations

I know the ex49 and Boomlover are in the "wannabe" with us catagory.

I'm sure you guys have all seen the internet Cannon Resource list.  There is two sections to the list the Paid sponsor list and all the others.

I am going send an email to every one on that list and invite them to come and display their wares.  Those who are not paid sponsors, I am going to solict a donation from them.

George, what is your feeling about me posting the handbill on the Machinist boards?

One other thing.  We have the range Saturday and Sunday.  I am going to continue the scheduled events on Saturday and if want we will have open range for those who want to do load developement on Sunday.  Comments.

I presume you are asking me; I see no problem from the moderator perspective.  You may get a lot of extra spectators that way if that is what you are looking for.  Then again, Cut Bank is awful far from most places and the price of gas (whatever that is come July/August) may keep them away.  You might post it on homegunsmith.com too, if you can post there.

The schedule sounds fine DD.  Two full days should give everyone plenty of time to do everything they want to do.  I will try to persuade whoever comes with us to go for another two days as you mentioned prior to the shoot so we can assist you in making targets or gun testing, etc.  Your efforts at advertising may well work; it's certainly worth a try.  The more participants, the better.  Mike and I are really looking forward to your Montana Model Cannon Shoot!  I sure hope Rick Neff can make it; we have admired his work for a number of years now.  He makes some nice artillery!

Mike and Tracy

Go ahead and post it at the Practical Machinist Gunsmith forum and maybe the General forum.  We get a fair amount of traffic over there.

Smokeballs are a 3/4 to 1 1/16 in sawdust covered ball with a fuse. (The Chinese are not very consistant when they make them). They emit a cloud of colored smoke. They are a kind of firework sold in the USA around the 4th of July and New Years.

This is a green one.

This is the mortar. 1144 stresspruf barrel, silver soldered to the drill rod trunnion, 1.07" bore. Soon as the paint cures I will put it together.

oooohhh , interesting little thing .
never seen anything similar in sweden .

will you have the fuse pointing to the powder or will you have it pointing to the muzzle ??
how direct after ignition will they start generate smoke ??

as it not are explosive maybe its best to not use the fuse at all , or what do you think ??
just pull the fuse out and have the hole where the fuse was directly on top of the powder to have an as direct ignition as possible . just to have it generating smoke already the same moment as it leave the barrel

This the second of a pair, I made two and gave the other to a friend that had me over for the last 4th of July. I shot his in the "white" two shots. It was propped up on a stick (about 50 degrees angle) and I used 15 or 20 grs of 4f (filled the 1/2" X 1/2" chamber). I cut the balls fuses to 1/4" and split them with a razor blade, then loaded the balls fuse down. They both went 25 yards or so, I expect more range when set to 45 degrees, and one smoked just a few feet out of the barrel until landing in the snow the other's fuse was burning but hit the snow before smoking. It made a respectable pop and I was pleased, although not as pleased as my friend when I presented him with the other mortar with measure, powder, balls, fuse, and a vent pick!
I have some very fast visco and I'm going to experiment with replacing the fuse with that, I would like them to light right away so it was pretty much done smoking when it hits the ground.

Thx

Hey!!! Everyone, listen up a minute!!!
A very important point was made at this evening's gun Club Meeting . If you are planning on coming to this shoot and staying in a local motels you need to be making reservations NOW. We have a crew coming in May for construction of the next increment of windmills. Rooms and RV spots are going to be tight,

Nearby towns where you can check for Rooms are Shelby and Conrad. Valier has a couple of bed and breakfast.

Hopefully the Range will have regraded when we shoot so the next item shouldn't be a big problem.

Every one who is comong should bring a shovel and rake.  The shovel to fight grass fires and fill in divots. And a rake to clean up our debris.

The club is pretty excited about this shoot.

The RV park takes in the bicycle  crowd in tents.

http://visitmt.com/categories/moreinfo.asp?IDRRecordID=1919&siteid=1.

Cut Bank Creek right below the RV park has some good fishing.

Be sure to tell Mike and Michelle you are coming for the Cannon shoot

Well, there is a lot of interest in this "shot", 2,393 viewers of the thread! Looks like only a handful of rooms available, so, trailor or tent camping? I know there is lots of room out there! Wide open country! Is that an option, Double D, besides the already mentioned site? Thanks, BoomLover

Cut Bank Camping

Shelby Camping

Conrad Camping

I strongly urge you to make Riverview RV in Cut Bank your first choice.  Good people and neighbors.  The other sites are 30 to 60 miles away. Be sure and tell them I sent you.
