Had an unusual request at the gun club meeting night.

One of the fellows last night asked if he brought his bowling ball out would some one shoot it out of their mortar...I told him yes.

I have brought the Cannon sighting post BTT- back to top so you can review it in preparation for the Cannon shoot.

I am going to set up the SAMCC field gun I have for the Seminar on shooting with out sights. This gun has a muzzle swell the same diameter as the rear reinforce. This gun also has a shooting platform. Every one will be welcomed to shoot this gun to learn how to sight

If you are bringing your cannon to learn how to shoot it without sights, it would be helpful if you have a shooting platform. The platform should raise the gun so that the top of the gun is at eye level. If you have a larger gun you should have some means to support your head so you can look down the top of the gun with out strain

If your muzzle swell is smaller the your rear reinforce you can make a simple sighting disc, The disc is made with a short plug that is slip fit in the muzzle to which a disc the same diameter as the rear reinforce is attached centered.

If you don't have this gear, don't worry, you can use mine to get the idea.

Do we have anyone to teach Mortar aiming or are we all going to learn by committee?

I will gladly launch any persons bowling ball , any where from 60 to 600 yards . (10 lb ball , 15 won't fly as far )

We need a "Donate a Ball" poster put up . condition of donation will be that the donor will get to light the fuse , I keep the ball ! Great idea , why didn't I think of that sooner . Hummmm , wonder if I have enough powder to accommodate all the old ball in forgotten corners of closets in this area . ?

Do you need bowling balls? I have around a hundred and can bring some. I am not sure I will have my bb mortar bored out for full size balls before the shoot.

I haven't bowled since I was a kid but I'm curious I seem to remember different weight balls ranging from around 10 pounds and going up from there,

so if the weight changes does the size of the ball differ? do people have a bowling ball gauge?

In the old days, light weight balls were undersized. Kids balls might be only 6" in diameter which made knocking down the pins harder. With the newer materials used for bowling balls now, they can make a 6 lb ball be just as big as a 16 pounder.

I have about 15 balls , weight ranges from 10.4 to 15.8 lbs. I try to shoot the 15 lb. balls @ the shorter range. No 2 balls I have weigh the same . The diameter is constant for all weights. (at least on the new balls. ) Would like to find some of the old Black balls . Fellows say they are the toughest of the bunch and ... bounce higher .

I got one batch from a bowling alley that was replacing its house balls and another from a pro shop that was going out of business. They get heavy in quantity.

I wont be going this year . I no longer have a rooter service and am dealing with neck issues.

My Canadian Cannons 1" swivel now resides with a friend . However I'll have something to replace it with shortly and will post a few pics when it all comes together.

" Mortar aiming " After the 4th of Julys 20 rounds down range ,We got the windage figured but the range varied with the weight of the balls using the same charge . I for one would not have liked to be standing where we had the target (10 bowling pins ) Close but no cigar.

I have only not heard back from one person on their needs for targets. Boomlover will you be here. You better, we have you assigned to bring all the beer for the braai....cannon shooting is thirsty work. Hires or A&W will be fine.

Ernie, you need to go to the Shelby bowling alley. Might not hurt to stop at the Great Falls bowling alley next time you are down there.

Priorities!!!

Well three weeks to go! I'll bet every one is running around getting everything ready for the shoot.

One thing you don't need to worry about is the road up here. I goggled the routes and if you guys follow mapquest you will be just fine. The roads are all paved and patroled daily by the local police. If you break down, you should have roadside assistance with 8 to 12 hours. Tow Fee's can be a bit high, but if you have paid your AAA premium they will pay most of it. There some pretty good repair shops along the way and most can get you repair parts with in 24 hours except weekends. There may not be motels avaialble, but it's warm enough to sleep in your car.

Do take 5 minutes and toss in a quart or two of oil, bottle of ATF and a gallon of prestone for an emergency. If you don't use them on the trip you can always use them to clean your guns when you get home.....

It was 90° at yesterday's rifle match and we are 50 miles from the Pacific Ocean. And it was in the 100's a week ago. 80's (even high 80's) will almost seem like a cool wave.

If someone were to travel to Montana for the cannon shoot, how much could they expect to pay for gas?
Here on Kaliforny's north coast the price just went up to $3.29 for regular.

Part of the $3.15 is due to the location; there is a lot of transport costs to get gas to the hinterlands. In the BIG city (LA area), regular is going for $2.65 or so right now. Another part of the cost is the low sulfur crude that is required to meet the PRK emissions rules since our exhaust blows onto the continent instead of the ocean.

But there are plenty of other reasons people are leaving the PRK.

We are gouged for gas (and other energy) here, but depending on where you live in the state, reduced heating and cooling costs can offset it some.

Fortunately, cannons are still A-OK here, so that's a plus.
