Barrel stub question
« on: December 21, 2008, 07:51:27 PM »
I have a friend who has 2 Remington 700 take off barrels that he said I could have if wanted. As I do not own a 700 currently, could they be cut back, rechambered and used as a barrel stub project? Just curious if anyone knows if it would work, of if the barrels might be too thin(they are sporter barrels). Thanks, Billy

Sounds like a neat project. I have a friend who started a custom NEF project in 300 whisper.  He got as far as making the bottom lug and rough chambering the barrel blank but never welded it together and finishing it.  This guy has lots of unfinished projects.  More than me and that's a few.  You may be able to take an existing barrel and cut it off, bore it out and screw or sweat the barrel blank into it.  Be careful about even temporarily making a rifle with a barrel less than 16".  If the cut off stub is bored out so it won't take any cartridge it should be OK.  Keep us posted.

Yes, they will work just fine, I have made three 30 Carbine stub barrels using Remington takeoffs.  The WSM's will leave you more barrel than most others.  Larry

Thanks guys, I am thinking hard about having at least one done. One of the barrels is a 257 Roberts take off, and I have been thinking about a 25-35 stub project, I just hope it can be done without making the barrel too short. THe other is a 22-250, but I will probably not do anything with it, as a rechamber would be cheaper than a stub project. Thanks, Billy

Thanks, I have this notion to try and have a series of barrels chambered in factory cartridges that are based on the 30-30 case. Starting with the 219 Zipper, then 25-35, factory 30-30 barrel, then maybe 375 Win, 32 Win Special, and 7-30 waters. May look for a 38-55 barrel as well, but would rather have one for 375 Win. Past that, I haven't made any other decisions or plans yet. I do have a couple of 26" 7-08 barrels that I could get as well, so 7-30 may rank higher on the list. Thanks, Billy

How about a 357 Herrett, thats off a 30-30, I just did one of those, it really looks like a nice round.  Larry

I thought about it, but was really going more for the rounds that had been factory chambered in lever guns. I never was much on the lever action rifles, but the 30-30 type cases in a single shot appeals to me for some reason. Thanks, Billy

Rusty the .256 win mag is a necked down .357 mag, I like the .256 GNR which is a .25 cal in the .357 maximum case. 8)
