Improved Tamer
« on: December 22, 2008, 03:09:24 AM »
I recently bought a Tamer in 20ga for a "foul weather" hunting gun. It will also do double duty as a protection piece when I'm up in northern Minnesota on canoe trips.

I had to change the stock set out because I feel a shotgun should point like a shotgun. The factory stock is way too short for me. Also, I really like the Survivor handguard for it's storage capability, and the tool-free removal. The factory swivels were swapped for QD sling studs.

I took it out for a romp in a snow storm we had 2 days ago, and even though I didn't see any small game it was a glorious day in the woods.

It weighs around 5.5 lbs and handles like a bunny hunters dream.  ;D

Nice looking little shotgun you have there.  I hope you have many more glorious days in the woods with it.

I like that...I am a big fan of wood stocks and I, too, do not like the Tamer stocks.  I have  a 410 Tamer that wears a set of woods.  My next project is a 20ga Tamer.  I have a rough cut manlicher forearm that I want to fit and also want to take an extra pistol grip stock and cut it down to a straight grip.  The plan is the easy part, now all I need is the Tamer 20ga and the time.

Here's my 410

Very nice .410.

I looked at those also, but in the end 20ga won out for versatility.

The 20ga Tamer hadn't come out yet when I built this one.  I, too, would have chosen the 20ga if they had been available.  Also, I was very happy that the 20ga Tamer is a mod choke rather than full choke like the 410.

I like the way you think. Take a look at my avatar. The only difference is it's a 12ga.

Very nice!  I have a 20g Tamer on order since earlier this month, I was hoping to have it for Christmas but I guess not.  I was also thinking of geting a regular synthetic stock for it as well.  I like the look of yours, I was thinking of keeping the Tamer forend but now that I see yours with the survivor's, you got me wondering!

Here's my 16Ga. walking around gun.  I have a .410 tamer as well and like the idea of changing out the stock to a full size with a survivor forend.

I had check all the wholesalers I normally use, and nobody had them for weeks. Finally I found one on gunbroker and paid a little more, but it was worth it.

Years ago, I had an FIE set up the same way, except it was parkerized and wood.

This is the perfected version of the type IMHO.

The Survivor forend is the way to go for a "pack gun".

I have only seen pics of the Survivor forearm.  How much stuff can you actually get in there??  Is it more favorable mostly because it comes off without tools??

I like it mostly for the tool-free disassembley, but it could hold quite a bit of stuff.

I have not made up a kit for it yet, but judging on the size, I figure these types of items would fit;

A sectioned cleaning rod such as a "Rapid Rod"
waterproof container for matches
small fishing tackle set in a soft container (ziplock bag)
a couple of shotgun rounds
a small first aid kit

etc.

I won't be putting anything heavy in there because I don't want to change the balance of the gun. I will also be making a custom gun case for it out of military grade canvas, with a carry strap and loops so I can attach it to the side of my ALICE pack.

Nice shot!  I like the "nature" picture ;D.  A got a call from the gun store today where I ordered my 20g Tamer and it's back order :'(.  Oh well, hunting season is far away now, plenty of time to wait.  Maybe I can start by ordering the new stock and a survivor forend!

If you order the stock and forearm directly from Choate you will save a few buck on the forearm.

IIRC, it was $22 from H&R, and $16 from Choate. The butts are the same price, $35

I like your setup there Mike. I wish H&R would make what you have as a standard item. I feel the standard tamer stock is worthless. It looks like the perfect pack/survival gun.

In fact I like your gun so much I think i'll make one up if I can get all the parts. I have a nickel plated sb1 frame and a synthetic butt stock. All I would need is the survivor forearm and a 20ga tamer barrel.

I looked at H&R's web site but did not see the tamer barrel offered as an accessory barrel. Can I get one as an accessory barrel?   ???

Click once, cuss repeatedly.

Erik,

I agree, the factory Tamer stock doesn't really "do" anything except hold some shells.

At least the Survivor butt has storage. Years ago I had one of those also and got rid of it.

The standard stock is trim and fits in a pack easier.

This gun was a joy to carry through a brush choked creek bed, nice and short.

Does anyone know if it's possible to make a 12 guage like the 20 guage posted here? I would like something like the Tamer 20  in 12 guage. Short and compact with lot more womp to it.

The closes you can come to a "factory" set up would be to get your hands on a 12ga Mod choke youth barrel(22").  Then you could order a set of 12Tamer stocks from Choate.  The factory doesn't make that barrel anymore and I don't think there are any left to purchase as an accessory barrel, but you can check that to be sure.  Otherwise, you will have to cut a Pardner barrel down to 20", but that would be a cylinder bore unless you sent it off for a PolyChoke.

Here's the link for the butt stock, the forearm stock is a standard synthetic stock or you could do any variation of stocks and forearms you want, Survivor,Tamer,Synthetic,Woods.
