Anyone konw anything good or bad about the 460 Rowland ?
Anyone have one ? do ya like it ?

Don't have one but in the June 2007 issue of Handloader the did an extensive writeup about the .460 Rowland conversion on a 1911.

Just my two cents from reading the article, but it seemed like a lot of work to do on a 1911 just to make it heavier and a bit longer because of the compensator and to bring a semi-auto 1911 up to the standards to enable it to shoot bullets on par with other magnums (44 mags).

I guess what I'm saying is I think you can just get a revolver that would be more reliable (or perhaps I should say have less parts to fail or jam). The only "give back" is the revolver has 6 rounds and the Rowland has .....Ghee...I think 10...but now I'm not sure if a 10 round clip actually carries 10 rounds. But I think it does.

THANKS , I carry a hand gun when hunting with rifle or shotgun . Revolvers are ok and what i carried for years . Got to toting a 10 mm glock then a delta gold cup . You know the story what's just a little better - next -next .....
tried a 400 cor-bon ok but nothing extra .

how about a Para P14 frame with a Rowland 460 top end. Put on the Dawson mag pad and have 17 in the mag plus one in the chamber. 18 rds of 44 mag power in a nice slim package.

a project , i like the idea of hi-cap but already have a Colt i was thinking about using . I wouldn't touch my hi-cap LDA .

Ghee...after 5 shots you could use that old Clint Eastwood movie line....you know...did I fire 5? or 17 shots? Hahahahaha.....

I'm working on a conversion right now. I ordered my kit from Clark Custom. That extra heavy spring is something else. Outside of that it wasn't bad at all. You need an all steel gun to take the increased power. I'm using a Kimber Custom II for my project.

Simply dis-assemple the pistol. Put your new barrel in with the compensator into your slide, put in the first half of the guide rod and spring. Then you put the slide back on the pistol and install the plug (hardest part for me because of the spring 22 lbs.). After that you screw in the secong half of the guide rod and tighten it down with the supplied allen wrench. Easy! Now I'm just waiting on ammo - I'm pumped!

Now that's funny. I'm setting this rig up for hog hunting and any other critters that catch my eye. So far the only ammo available is loaded with 185 gr bullets. I'll probably start reloading a 200 or 230 gr bullet later on. I'll post pics and have a range report later on.

currently, for the 460 Rowland, CorBon has loads with 185gr JHP, 230gr FMJ and JHP and a 255gr, unspecified type.

Are 45acp bullets suitable for hunting??? Will a 45acp bullet at 1300, 1400 or 1500 hold up on a hog or bear??? Just curious.

Thanks for the heads up on the ammo through CorBon. Didn't think about them.

I don't know about a 45 ACP bullet for bear - never hunted bear. However, with the increased horsepower of the 460 Rowland should put a hog down at distances that are reasonable for a semi-auto pistol. I'll let you know how it goes when I go hog hunting with this thing.

.45 Colts have been used on bears for years. A hard cast bullet of the same wt. at the same velocity should be fine. For jacketed I would go for a metal jacket with a flat point. Like the Sierra 185gr Match King. The jacket covers the base and goes up over the front. There is a small area of exposed lead at the front. The Total Metal Jacket Hornady 200gr SWC should be a good one also.

If I was going to use a 460 I would load the 230 gn fmj-swc from Mag-Tech - totally enclosed fmj with a proper swc configuration, or a hard cast 238 gn Lyman #452423, a Keith sytle swc developed for the 45 auto rim. I use both in my 45 acp and both penetrate the same distance and do not deform at acp velocities. The Mag-Tech bullet is not a target bullet and should hold up to higher velocities. HTH. Mikey.

I picked up so bullets made by Rainier . They are copper coated not jacketed . A few were not coated completly and you could see the thickness . I had thought it would be quite thin but found it very thick . I have to wonder how this type bullet would work ? Anyone used these type bullets ?

Nope, but what Mikey suggested sounds very interesting. I would think a SWC hardcast would be the way to go. If you figure 230 grains at close to 44 mag velocities; then it ought to pack a wallop.

I just had a look at the Mag-Tech .45acp 230gr TMJ-SWC. It looks very good!
I shoot/shot Ranier .355" 125gr Truncated Cone in my 9x23@1375fps. They produced good accuracy with minimal leading.

I haven't shot any yet . Got them years ago ( the price for 500 9mm - 17.99 , no price on the box of 45's ) . the leading problem was what concerned me . thanks

Colt 1911 box stock Govt mod.
one note - out of a box of 500 about a dozen were under size . they were loose after crimping . The rest were tight . Yep i checked the cases and they were fine .
