Hornaday 60 gr. and the 32 H&R Mag
« on: December 22, 2008, 11:32:37 AM »
unable to locate load info for the H 60g. I'd like to shoot the 60 in silhouette to reduce recoil, looking for guidance.

Thanks,

GB doesn't like unpublished loads listed here, but if it were me I'd start with the maximum loads Hornady lists for their 85-grain bullet.  I'd expect the faster powders like RedDot and HP-38 to be the most appropriate with that tiny bullet.  The faster powders will also reduce recoil even further.

Lite bullets and silhouette competition aren't really conducive to many high scores... Why not a 115SWC at moderate velocity?

I have used them, but very little and now only shoot them in my 32-20 at top velocity.

So you believe the bullet will work, accurately? It does have a small bearing surface and Hornady stopped publishing loads even though they still make the bullet. Also, I'm confused, I see loads all over this forum; but, they aren't supposed to be?? Personally I look for guidance and wouldn't consider an internet load without cross checking a manual. I hate reinventing the wheel from scratch each time I change something. Thanks for the guidance.

My take on it is this, I would very much hate to miss quote a load have someone miss quote what I wrote. ESP since this data is available for those willing to take a bit of time and look. Any manufacturer will provide data for any bullet they make. Some charge for it by selling manuals, while others will provide the data free of charge on the internet. there are also a couple reloading sites where data is available.

Your double checking of any/all loads with manuals is just plain good since and kudos to you for doing so.

22 hornet @ 55 gr takes everything on the 100M range; but, what a different bullet. Hornady quit publishing a load; but makes the bullet. My 32 TC takes everything with the 85 gr. Hornady. I'd just like to reduce recoil. In fact we have .22M shooters doing well with their 40 gr bullets. The H 60 is short thick with minimum bearing surface. Just looking for input before I try and make it work.

What powder are you using?  You can usually reduce recoil by going to a lower charge weight of a faster powder.  Since trajectory isn't really an issue at measured distances, you could back off the load even more as long as accuracy remains.

My 32 barrels work well with Titegroup and WSF if the H85 gr. bullet is used. A local gun dealer has offered me a quantity that he picked up and can't sell. It's a great deal if the bullet will work. I don't want to go to the expense or development time if there is an inherent problem with the bullet. I called Hornady and they said it's good and start with my current powders @ mid-range for the H85, then work both directions to the min and max until I get a workable load. It would be worth buying a pound of powder if the 60 gr works.

I did  a bunch of work up with a sierra 71 grain 32 auto bullet and Herco powder from my 10" 30 Carbine one time. Going to have a load lazier straight and little or no recoil to mention. Well got an accurate load at 25&50 meters--old distances---and OK at 75 yards but would not hit a full sized target reliably. The short bullets loose velocity so quickly accuracy changes dramatically. Hornady 100 SJ is a good bullet with 4.5 Unique from my 32 Mag barrel--published as accuracy load in the Lyman reloading manual.

This little 60 gr. is hard to load. 85 gr and up is easy. Is it just the small size or am I missing something?
