Makeing a Barrel for H&R in 5.7 x 28
« on: December 23, 2008, 11:13:33 AM »
I would like to know if anybody knows if there are any custom company's that would make me a barrel for A H&R SB2 to shoot 5.7x 28?  I do know that New England does not offer this barrel but i am in love with this round and would like to use it in a single shot rifle.

There are no custom barrel makers for H&R. You do have two options however. You can get someone to do a barrel stubbing project. This involves a donor barrel and a barrel of proper groove diameter (I think it is .224"). Or you can buy a 22 Mag barrel and have it rechambered to your round. The rim fire barrels are not 4140 Crome Moly steel. It escapes me right now the exact steel used. It is a little milder, but there have been people that have done it with satisfactory results. I do not think you can get the factory to fit a rim fire barrel to your SB2 frame. You will have to buy one and fit it to your frame. If you do this, it is cheaper than a stubbing project. Good Luck and Good Shooting.

I worked on a Handi in .17X28 5.7X28 necked down to 17.  A 22 mag barrel would do, you will need to use a modified RF ejector because H&R does not make a CF ejector that is long enough, and H&R will not sell the RF ejectors without fitting them to the barrel, it would be fun project I think.  Problem with the .22 barrel is that that they are a 1 in 14 twist I think and the standard 5.7X28 uses a 1 in 9 twist, so factory ammo may not be stable out of a rf barrel.  You could stub with a good quality .224 barrel which would be the way I would do it, look for a nice new takeoff Remington barrel, they are cheap and I have used them on other stubbig projects.   Larry

How much are we talking about to have the barrel stubbed?  Since i need to use a barrel in .224  what is going to be the best one with the closest twist for the 5.7 x 28?  I am rather new to gun work but if i have one stubbed what will i have to do because if i cut any off the barrel now they will not reach the firing pin?  PLZ Help

Barrel stubbing costs $250-$300 plus the cost of the donor barrels, you can read more about stubbing in the FAQs and Help sticky.  ;)

They've been making it for many, many years, only they call it a .22 Hornet. ;D

More appropriatly, a rimless 22 k-hornet ;D and a case that is loaded to a factory spec of 53,000 psi., something that you cannot do with the hornet case.

You could use a centerfire .224 cal barrel as a liner for a 20 ga shotgun barrel.

This is a fairly easy task to do.  On the plus side is that the cartridge has a small diameter, so a stubbing project has a lot of chamber wall thickness to work with and the barrels are easy to come by.  On the minus side is that a rimfire barrel will probably not work because of the slow twist rate, so a simple rechamber of a 22 LR is out.  The small diameter of the cartridge makes finding an ejector that will or  work difficult, I think a 22 Hornet ejector would work with a little modification, the diameters are close and the non rimmed cartridge may work if the hornet ejector is properly worked on.  These are high pressure rounds, also they have a small case volume, so they are a little fickel when re-loading for them.  Good luck, it would be a fun gun to shoot, kind of like a 22 Mag on Steriods.  I have a necked to .17 version sitting here, called a .17 Velociraptor.  not spelled right I am sure.  Larry

I found a picture of the barrel in 5.7, this is the 17 Cal version, but it would be the same as the stock version.  Larry

How did you wind up getting the ejector working, Larry?

I'm trying to get a rechamberd 22WMR to 5.7x28 barrel working on an SB2 frame, but I didn't think it all the way through and I'm stuck on the ejector work.  It seems like there ought to be a straight-forward way of getting it to function, and I'd appreciate knowing how you did it (and/or how you'd do it differently.)

Thanks!

I was being an idiot.  :)  Here's what I wound up doing to the rimfire ejector to get it to eject 5.7x28
The red lines roughly illustrate the final contour of the ejector.  I'd already filed the claw, but I also needed to provide clearance on the bottom so that it could swing away from the rim after ejection and also permit insertion of a fresh round.  I had already done the rimmed-to-rimless mod, and was good to go after the ejector could move.

It proved out with "cat sneeze" handloads in the back yard, but I'll have to get to the range to see how it functions with full-power ammo.  :D

Esteves,

Your ejector is real similiar to what was done to a 30-30 ejector to make it work on my 45 ACP Handi. The slight chamfer on the top of the ejector post will allow the action to close when the cartridge is fully in the chamber.   It took two of us to make my ejector work so you must be twice as smart as my friend & I. ;)
