Best 6 X Fixed
« on: December 24, 2008, 03:50:22 PM »
Im looking for a really good quality 6 X Fixed to go on a .223 All shots will be between 30 to 100 yards. I really dont want to spend over 300.00 and I might consider a 4 X 32 etc...if the quality is really good.

Any of these 3 are GOOD:
      - Burris FFII 6X40(under $300)
      - Leupold FXII 6X36(under $300,JUST over $300 w/long range reticle)
      - Sightron Big Sky 6X42(a bit over $300,but under $350,but it would be my
                                       #1 choice)

Just found this and it would definitly be my #2 choice:
       - Zeiss Conquest 4X32(just at $300)

Wow I see there is not a lot of choices when it comes to a fixed scope. I didnt know about some of the ones you mentioned so thanks for the help. I dont know if I can get by with a 4 X or not. My main concern is clarity at dusk/dawn and glare from the sun. I can tell this is going to be a hard decision for me to make. Now that the kids are playing with theyre toys I can do some more research.

Your right, there aren't alot of choices in the fixed line, but there are quite a few in the low power variable line say 2-7 range. Maybe consider one. I recently bought a new but discontinued Sightron SII 1.5-6x42 and honestly believe it could be the only scope I would need for everything. I will tell you that I shot a whitetail doe at 312yds(lasered later)with my old but tried and true El Paso K4 Weaver w/post and crosshair reticle with no problem. What do you know about the Weaver Grand Slam scope in 4.75x40?

What will you be shooting??? I carry an AR most of the time coyote hunting. It wears a 3 x 9 Leupold set on 3X 99% of the time. I shoot at mostly running coyotes and the last 1 I killed was abt. 175 yrds. running and taken with scope set on 3X. Just for grins took a shot at an ear of corn at 255 yrds. ( lazered) and hit it. My point is as close as you are shooting you will have trouble finding moveing targets with a 6X scope, and you really don`t need that much magnifaction any way.

Thanks  Catfish. Well its really hard to say which direction I need to go. On the leupold the 4x33 is only 10.00 less than the 6x36. I know its a rimfire scope but I dont see why I cant use a Nikon prostaff 4x32 ?

As an answer to your question I think the Leupold 6x42 is about the best fixed 6X out there. No clue the current pricing on them. BUT I agree with catfish that's a bad choice for your use. If you are gonna get a fixed power for 100 yards and under make it a 4x not a 6x due to the narrow field of view of the 6X scopes.

A 2-7 tho is really the proper scope for such use. If money is no object the Bushnell Elite 4200 1.5-6 has got to be the best of the lot in that price range in my opinion. It's what sits atop my wife's rifle for just the sort of use you mention. She's never taken a shot at game over 100 yards and likely never will. It ain't cheap but it is as good as it gets. Buy that Stevens and spend the extra money on this scope and you'll never regret it.

you may not wanna go this route but I have a bunch of killer scopes that were all under a hundred bucks bought at pawn shops, all fixed 4x, 2 3/4x, one weaver 6x.

a place I know has had an old M8 6x forever for $250

I would not suggest a 6X at all, to much magnification if you get a close shot. The 4X would be better, but limmited to a few products.
 In 4X I have a leupold fx 2 4x33 and nikon buckmaster 4x40.
The buckmaster is much better in low light although the leupold is slightly clearer at the surrounding edges. Both are about the same in the middle of the scope, my eyes can't tell the difference anyhow.
 As for a better scope.

This is better than both in clarity and light transmission. On 4X I can see the individual blades of grass at 100 yards on a bale of hay, cannot with either above with same clarity. No wash out at edges either. There is a new 6500 I am looking at for later in the spring. Very impressed with the elite line I have 12 of this particular model. Not the best out there but best in this price range.

Thanks for all the help. I will have to keep the variable magnification in mind as well.

Last year I got my wife the Weaver K4, fixed 4 times scope for her 243. It is a very clear scope, holds zero and it is as bright as needed for legal hunting times. I think I paid about $110 for it. Good solid performer for a decent price.

I don't know if there are anymore in stock, but CheaperThanDirt had Sightron SIII 1.5-6x50 scopes on sale for $299.  I have seen them advertised anywhere from $500 to $700.  Its a step above the SII 1.5-6x42 that was mentioned earlier.  I have both and they are both great scopes for the money.  The SIII has the 50mm obj which is overkill but it is probably the best low light scope you can get without going up  to the top dollar scopes light swaros, doctors, and shmidt and benders.  I would put it up against a VXIII anyday.  I just wish I had the money to stock pile some of them.
