Changing ejectors

Ok.  Deep breath,  :'(  just looked at the 7-30 Waters barrel I had done.  The 223 ejector is unchanged.  Sticks up into the chamber and of course a cartridge won't fit.  :'( :-[ :(  So what is the best route to go here?  Try to modify the existing ejector, or order a 30-30 piece to replace it with?  I really would like to get this project done before next hunting season. :P  DP

The .223 ejector and the 30-30 ejector are built differently.  The .223 ejector is made for a rimless case so it is spring loaded to be able to drop down to go over the rim.  The 30-30 is built like a shotgun ejector for a rimmed case.  Only proper way to do it is to go with the 30-30 type of ejector and remove the lifter button if you have one installed.  I would hope anyone who would modify a barrel for you would put in an ejector that would work.  Larry

 The ejector/extractor was removed for the re-chambering. Then reinstalled after the work was done, right? Maybe just slipped his/her mind when everything was put back together. Instead of a 30-30 part the original was installed. Drop them a line and I'm sure they will make it right.

 Other than that, I would say YES you are correct and need a 30-30 extractor/ejector.

I would just order the right 30-30 ejector from Brownell's depending on whether the barrel is post '97 or older, then don't install the lift button as Larry said. Old ejectors had thick posts, you can see pics of the difference in the rimmed to rimless conversion in the FAQs link below.

I just compared a 223 ejector to both my 30-30s, the 223 isn't as wide as the 30-30, so either the notch in the barrel will have to be cut wider to use the 30-30 ejector as is, or the 30-30 ejector post will have to be cut narrower to fit the existing barrel notch.....or the 223 ejector post cut down to the height of the 30-30. Any way you look at it, there needs to be some modification, it won't be a drop in part.  :-\

So, if I modify the existing ejector, I take the lifter button out and it will work with the rimmed case?  I do want to retain the ejector and not convert to the extractor.  The 30-30's is alot wider than the one that was on the 223 barrel I sent.  The part under the rim on the 30-30 is the same, but it gets wider as it goes down the the slot on the barrel.  Keep in mind I'm good at tearing things apart, not putting them together. :-[  DP

Tim, I found it easier to simply cut the notch in the barrel with a Dremel cut off wheel and needle files.   Doug

I have a new 30-30 ejector sitting here, if you will send me a new thin one you get I will put this one in the milling machine and make it fit a .223 type cutout barrel for you.  Larry
