I saw 11 deer and two of them were really nice bucks but I never could get a shot at them- hence the two does -- we are allowed 3 a day on anterless-- anyway used a blue RHawk with a 2x burris - in 41 GNR-- 41/44-- and my home cast 255 wlngc that Dan at mountain Mold made in brass --it has a .331 meplat and using AA#9 I settled on 1340 fps    On the second deer I saw the hair fly as the bullet exited and she was down and gone in seconds -- the first was also a lung shot but a bit high so she ran some no real problem to find --both were in the 120- 150#
Now getting them out took from 4.44PM to 8.45PM -- I am getting to old for that-- Anyway Dick metcalf once opined that deer are nearly invisible to the bullets often used on them in hand guns-- i think he is right and I am certainly guilty of  the big man's bullet-- course they are not invisible as to not be killed by these heavy cast bullets -- a 255 in the .41 is like about 265 or 270 gr in a .44 as to SD.. My point deer are not that hard to kill when bullets are place right-- they do not care if is a 41, ( I doubt my two cared if mine was a wildcat 41/44) 44,45 475-- they are dead and do not know or care--personally I think you can get too small 38 special --did not say it would not kill-- and for me too big  --I had a .454 and it was too much for me --I will stick with my .41 and other than price had just as soon use a JHP-- the 170 kill well and dig deeper than I realized--my cast bullets cost about .4 verse .26-so likely I will use them -- if I want them to expand ,I will make them cast soft points - most any of the 40+ cal. will easily kill deer type animals with most ever you put in them--again finding them and placing the shot is hard part     -but all the scouting-practice and the casting and the chronoing  and eating sure  is fun -- using what you like and made just makes them taste better

Taking four hours to get them out reminds me of a lesson I learned many years ago from an older man while hunting mulies in New Mexico.  I shot one early one morning about six miles from camp. there was no way to get a vehicle in to pick it up so we packed it on our backs.  About six hours later, resting next to the campfire with a big cup of hot "joe" laced with just a spot of Blackberry Brandy, Mr Naven walked into camp and fired up his old Toyota Land Rover, he asked if I would help him load his deer, we drove down a trail about a mile, there was his deer about three feet from the trail, we put it in the back of Toyota and headed back to camp.   When I told him it took almost six hours to pack mine out, he said, "as you get older, you get wiser, I don't shoot anything I can't drive up to and load."  That's kinda the way I hunt today........but the doctor no longer lets me enjoy the Brandy.
