.243 drew piggy blood this morning. (More Graphic Pics)
« on: December 26, 2008, 06:55:29 AM »
Out again to fill a doe tag this morning with the T3 Lite .243 and guess what showed up at about 7:15? Five of these little beggars all over my corn. I watched 'em about fifteen minutes and finally called the guy to whom I would be giving the doe if I got one and he said a hog would do.......so at about 7:30 I picked one of the largest two and the .243 spoke and she hit the dirt. I hit her right below the eye and the exit wound was about the diameter of a nickel, maybe a bit more. I'm impressed with this Federal Fusion ammo, that's only about 4" travel and still decent expansion. Got this porker at the same spot I was on last weekend and all total this is three deer and this hog from the same spot. I didn't weigh her but I figure about 90 lbs. dressed.

Where do you want to do that, Kurt?

Here's a "hear say" for ya:  My horse vets wife, a close friend of my wife, told us someone brought wild hogs into a game farm in lower Michigan and one had a rabies that was common only to hogs.  Now, all hogs exhibited at fairs, etc. cannot leave the site alive.  Anyone hear of this?

John are you going to leave any game in SE OK for the rest of us?  :)

Great job, 90 lbs should be a good eating size. Charlie

I guess that's first blood for the new Tikka? Good shootin' and good huntin'. I had my Tikka in .243 to the range today shooting some 58gr. Horn. V-Max. Wouldn't do for hog, but should work just fine for varmints. I'm hoping to do some hog hunting in Feb. in Tenn. I'm still debating, but think I'll take the Tikka in .270 and possibly the Marlin 336 in .35.

Actually that's the second animal downed with the .243. Got the doe last weekend with it also. Good choices for the TN hogs I think. Remember if you are going to take a heart/lung shot that it's a lot lower on a hog than on a deer. The heart sits forward and way low in the chest, about 5" lower than the shoulder and forward, kinda behind the leg. Best shot is a head shot if ya can get one. The armor plate gets really thick on the big ones.

Good stuff should be some good chewin there , the 243 is a favourite pig calibre in this part of the world as well . As far as the boars and there fighting shields go a couple of years ago my bowhunting mate shot a 4 or 5 old boar that had 2 1/2" thick pad starting directly behind his head covered the neck , over the shoulder and extended to within 2" of the boars back legs and wrapped around nearly under his belly where it tappered to about an inch thick - never seen anything like it before or since usually the shield stops on the shoulder and ribs - he must have been a real scrapper as the length of the fighting pads was covered in rips and scars , his ears where chewed off , probably dogs . Doing well to live that long in the harsh country as well

The only time I've shot paper with these was when I was originally sighting the gun in. Two to adjust the scope to POA and then two more from 100 yards that stacked one on top of the other at 1/2" apart. It's the 95 grain Fusion bullet.

lik2hunt, it seems we are brothers. I got a pig with my T3 243 as well, you get a deer, I get a deer. What are going for next?
I still use handloaded Sierra 85gr and the scope on mine is Bushnell 6500 in DNZ mounts.

Uhh.....Ok bro......I'm in.......seems we prefer the same sling as well. I think I'll go for another pig. No more gun season for deer here until next November. I'm thinking a coyote might enjoy meeting one of these Fusion bullets as well. Of course he won't be around to share his experience with the rest of his pack.  ;)

Only joking on the bro part  ;D
The coincidence of us using the same equipment and then shooting the same animals had me chuckling. In TN deer doesn't end till Jan 11th. I am with you on the coyotes, there are a nunch round here. I found a dead deer on my property last week, the following morning it was reduced to a head and skin, 20 feet from where it died. Hello Foxpro, by by mr yote.

I wish we had pigs to hunt up here. When its not deer season all i really have around home is coyotes and foxes. get the odd badger or racoon but they are pretty hard to find.
