New Chain on Sleepy Creek 1.5
« on: August 19, 2003, 03:31:27 PM »
I am looking to change the chain on my Sleepy Creek 1.5s.I was wondering if I was to use an S hook run threw the hook on the bottom to connect the new chain to the trap if that would  be strong enough. If I have any incedentials with coyotes. If anyone has tried this or has a suggestion on how to do it let me know. Thanx

If you use a short chain say 6 to 8 inches and a heavy s hook i dont think you will need to weld s hook shut as if you catch an incedental yote it wont have enough chain length to pop open s hook.  If you  have a chain 12 to 18 inches long weld s hook shut and possibly use shock spring like a PIT or JC Conners brand shock spring.

You could, maybe should, attach the chain via a good swivel ("J" rivets) and maybe even add a mid chain swivel along with the swivel point at the stake.

I think I know what you're getting at. Are you looking at the SC 1.5 with the centered cross piece with that stamped eye? If so, the twist link is connected directly to the base, without a swivel point. If you want to change the chain you can either cut off the existing chain, and leave the 1 link section that is fixed to the trap, add a swivel and then attach the chain. Another option is to remove the chain all together and drill out through the stamped ring and favoring the frame side. This will allow a quick link to fit through, and you can do what ever you want with the rest. A "J" hook requires a ton of material to be taken off.  A "S" hook will fit through, but I don't see any advantage over leaving the 1 section of twist link instead. The quick link with a swivel attached directly to it will lay flat, and have a closer swivel point to the trap. Make sure to weld the jaw ends, or bend them up if you want a shot at holding a yote in a SC 1.5

I hope this is what you meant.

Thanx for the help. I think Im headed in the right direction. I am not going to target yotes with these traps but I caught a few incedentials last year and want to hold them. I tried to find a quick link to fit but they wont open far enough. By drilling the hole that will eliminate this?

The hen has me on a short leash after she saw the pocket book after the Alma convention.  Hopefully off "the list" by the time season rolls around. Going to be laying an egg in December, so the "honey do" list has been growing rapidly.

StlTrp,

Drill with the existing hole, but lean the drill bit into the frame side. Don't go overboard with the drill size, as it doesn't take much more to get the link to fit. If I remember, I think I crimped the stamping closed a bit in the vice to help open it some.

Thanx Mallard. I tried the drill and it worked good. I got the link to fit and it should lay down nice against the bottom of the trap.
