I was trying the parental controls feature in Windows Vista at its default settings. The manual says that it restricts access to porn and weapons sites. I figured that meant I wouldn't be able to see these forums or nra.org. Sure enough, they are blocked and are not retrieved.

you will need to ask your parents for permission.

We have the same at work but it is turned off over the lunch hour and promptly at 5:00pm

I would not have Windows Vista on a home computer.
Gives Microsoft way too much control of something I own!
Ubuntu Linux is the only way to go for me! If you have an old
computer laying around download and install Ubuntu on it.
Once you play with it and learn a bit about Linux, you will probably
want to install it on your main computer also. With some software tweaks
and a couple of hops through proxy servers, It helps to be a little more
anonymous while surfing the net also.

There's always Sun Solaris 10 which runs on an intel platform. I run VMware workstation and have several OS's loaded.

I just bought a laptop to replace a Dell I wore out. It comes with Vista, which I dislike, as it seems to steal from Linux and Mac and make a hash of the mix. I prefer Linux, and am pretty minimalist. I often use Linux Puppy. It is small enough to fit on a mini-disc and I carry one in my wallet. That way, if I have to use someone else's computer, I do not have to worry about their settings, nor is my Web surfing goiing to put a virus on their machine. Also, with key loggers being so common on public computers, like in hotel business rooms, I do not have to worry about any sensitive information being captured. Puppy is small enough to run entirely in RAM. It can read Windows partitions, but not vice-versa. I was able to retrieve some files from one of my daughters' computers when she forgot the password. All this is in a package that is about 90 megs, with word processor and browser.

I was fully prepared to dislike Vista, but I really like it so far. I also like Excel and Word in Office 2007.

The ease with which I was able to install Windows XP on my last computer lulled me into a false sense of security about the installation and configuration of Vista. Vista was more of a hassle to install and configure. There were a few hassles, but nothing major. It just took longer than I had hoped it would.

I put a Bluetooth adapter in the new computer so it can talk to the mouse and printer without using cables or networking. Slick! I'm never going back to cables. It works great.

It's remarkable how the technology has changed and improved. Our old desktop machine finally couldn't be nursed to perform well anymore so it had to be replaced. It was new in 2003. The original owner passed away and the computer was given to me. It had a 120Mhz Pentium processor and I maxed out the memory to 256Mb. Hard disk was 9Gb. It had a couple of USB 1 ports, which kept it modern for a time. On receiving the computer in 2005 I upgraded memory and Windows, using XP for the time we had it. It served us well. But it required a lot of maintenance. There was constant vigilance about keeping the hard drive organized and defragmented.

One thing though: I really should have replaced that machine a couple of years ago. Getting a new machine was quite miraculous.

I was the same way until I got tired of my last job (being a cop).
I then went back and got an applied science degree and have been working with computers
every since. (last 12 years).. They have treated me well as far as paying the bills,
it is a good line of work. There are companies that pay good money to have folks like me
try to deface (hack) their network security. Getting paid to be devious and dastardly!
That is just side work but it is fun!

Matt, there is a trick to get around the obfuscation of the root account that Ubuntu does. If you do a sudo su you will use sudo to gain access to the root account. After that you are dropped into a bash shell where you can run any command, including passwd to change the password of the root account. After that password is changed you can login to your root account like any other Linux system.

While we're discussing Linux distro's, I'll throw in my approval for Linux Mint. It's an Irish variant of Ubuntu that comes a little more media-friendly (plays DVD's and such) out of the box. It's default color schemes are all a more pleasant lighter green too compared to the really drab (IMHO) brown/tan scheme used by Ubuntu. YMMV.

I may have to set up a new VM and install Ubuntu and try that. Back when we got the new servers a buddy of mine tried to get me to put Ubuntu on them but after playing with it I was not impressed enough to move from CentOS as I have been playing with it for years.

To me Linux be it what ever flavor you like is the best and smartest way to go for home use as most any software you could ever want is available and most for free. It is secure and quick even on older computers and is way more stable than any version of windows ever could be. Also it is great for techs as I have DSL (Damn Small Linux) installed on a thumb drive that I use to check hardware and such when windows lays down on peoples systems.

Oh yeah and another great thing about most flavors of Linux is they are FREE...

Yeah. CentOS is pretty good too, so I wouldn't be in too big of a hurry to ditch it

. I've also used it for several servers at work. For a time VMWare Server was a bit easier to get working on CentOS instead of Ubuntu, so I setup all my VMware hosts using CentOS. Lately though after they released VMWare ESXi as freeware I've focused on that as my base virtualization platform and have moved all those boxes over to ESXi.

We're on such a hodgepodge of distros at work though that it's almost embarrassing. My email server is running on Gentoo. The two web servers are running on FreeBSD. I have a dedicated Syslog server still running CentOS, and I have an NTP server running Ubuntu. The main network file servers are handled by a different guy but last I checked I think he was using OpenBSD + Samba on those.
