MOSSBERG 4X4 300 WIN MAG, LEUPOLD VXII SCOPE MOUNTING PROBLEM
« on: December 27, 2008, 05:57:34 AM »
Recieved a Mossberg 4x4 300 win mag and a Leupold VXII 3-9x50 for Christmas. The problem is, I am having a booger of a time mounting this scope. First off tried using med. hight Leupold rings on the stock mounts...too short in hieght and bases were too far apart. Then used chart supplied by Cheaper than dirt and bought 1" Dual Dovetail Rings, high and Dual Dovetail 2-Piece Base Matte Finish - Remington 40X, 700 (LA & SA); 721/725 (RH & LH, LA & SA); Weatherby Vanguard 700 (RH, LA) part #50044...supposed to work by their calculations. Paid as much in shipping as I did for the rings to get them here in time for a hunt. I mounted the bases, locked on the rings and low and behold... the bases were set about 1/2" too short, the rings are hitting the bell. Scope nearly reached 350 fps across shop, or would have if wifey wouldnt have been standing there. . If anyone cane please advise me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated......I am at a loss, neither Cheaper than dirt nor Leupold will reply to my e-mails.  ???

If I understand your dilemma, I think you would have been ok with the stock bases (If they will withstand the 300's recoil over time without the dovetail notch becoming deformed), rings high enough to get the objective lens (front bell) off the barrel and a set of extention rings.  I've used Weaver extention rings with good results for years.

http://www.weaver-mounts.com/products/detachableTopMount.aspx.

Check about midway down the page, left side.

You may also have to use a longer base.  Check the base chart at the Weaver link.  It shows a #40A as an extention base for the Mod 1500-1700 rifle.  The same 40A bases is listed for the Rem 700.

I hope it works out for you.

:D :D :D You are the man EVOC,
I was soo aggravated that I didn't even think about extension rings. Found some from Leupold(dual dovetail), should be the ticket, ordered them anyway. Not real big on aluminum mounts on a magnum and already have the Leupold bases mounted. Again I really do appreciate the eye opener. ;D
