Ruger No.1 Scope Mount
« on: December 27, 2008, 01:01:25 PM »
I have a ruger No.1 in 243 Win. with the quarter rib scope mount. I'm in the proscess of trying to improve accuracy. On their website RVB Precision talks about slotting the front mounting holes on the rib to improve accuracy  http://www.rvbprecision.com/articles/9/accuracy-tips-for-the-ruger-1.
On my rifle, in addition to the countersunk phillips head screws the quater rib is also held in place by two posts. The front post is attached to the barrel and the back post is attached to the rib. It also looks like something (bedding material or release agent) was placed in the hole on the barrel for the rear post.
How many of you have done this? any improvemnt in accuracy? Do I need to slot the holes for the front post as well as the screws? Would just removing the front post be a solution. Is barrel heat and rib warping that big an issue? Should I be using different scope mounts? Seems to me Ruger put the posts in there to lock everything together.
Any input is apprciated. Thanks

I have a number one in 22-250 and I use the bushnell 3x9x40 scope and the mounts that came with the rifle and I have had no problem with the gun in any way. The only thing that I find in the 22-250 is a period of time to let the barrel cool a bit between shots. The gun is well designed but a bit heavy. In my opinion unless you are trying to shoot through the same hole every shot the gun is fine as is. Yes I have read a lot of pros and cons about how they do not hold a good group but something to think about which I think is very important is how well the gun fits you, is the gun does not fit you it can become a problem in being able to shoot a good group. This past deer season my son and I was sighting in my muzzle loader the gun fit me perfect but when he shot it the scope would hit his head because he was having to move closer to the scope than I was. Well any way others can give you more info and maybe even better MTCW

Changing your trigger will help accuracy greatly. I wasn't pleased with my #1 so I had a Moyers trigger installed and adjusted pretty low... Works wonders now.

I installed Weaver bases to get better eye relieve, and considerable weight reduction on two of my #1 Rugers. I do not know the Moyers trigger but I honed and adjusted the trigger sear and hammer seat to two pounds on 4 of 5 , adjusted the over travel. Works good.

My 25-06 has the three screw system which is very easy to work on. I also in stalled a speed lock hammer and spring. Don't know if it made much difference but it not do any harm. In any event
this rifle produces 3shot groups that are BR quality.

It also has my wood hanger damper. By the amount of e-mail I received it has improved accuracy to a great deal for many #1 owners. All my 5 Rugers employ this wood block. For practically no money lay out with the use of simple tools I recommend it to anyone with manual wood working skills.

I've got the Moyers trigger on order. As I understand it's basically the same as the 3 set screw trigger that Ruger used to use. I checked Fred's site and think that by reworking the older No. 1s he gets to work on the better 3 screw trigger!
Fred, I like how you changed the scope mount but it's probably more than I'm geared up for in equipment, ability and confidence.
I do want to experiment with your wood shims and wonder how you put the correct radius on them?

Fred,

Where are you in Alberta?

My last job as field service engineer was in support of Canadian Army armoured vehicle turrets and systems.  I know the Edmonton, Calgary, Medicne Hat, and Wainwright areas well from spending many long term assingments there.
