There are lots of smart people out there, and lots of things to build and figure out, I have a great time doing it, but I know that there is a lot of talent that just needs to get interested in making something or improving something.  I am having a lot of fun, I sure hope someone else will start thinking up things to do also.  This is how innovation happens.  Have fun guys, I know I am.  Larry

I don't have the tools or training for the stuff you do, Larry.  But I sure do enjoy seeing it all get done.  The explanations and great pics are all fun and interesting to me.  Thanks a lot.

Done!  I will fit an "O" ring to hold it centered and send it off to Quick for final testing.  It has been interesting, not something I would want to make again, and definitely not something I would ever make for someone who does not understand the dangers and limitations of firearms and these types of things.  I did fire a round through it and it worked, but you never know, guess only you can decide what project is safe and what isn't, so have fun out there guys but be safe, not all experiments are successful.  I did this one because there was interest in chamber adaptors and inserts, I really think they are mostly gimmicks and novelty items, not really practical for much but a conversation piece or curiosity.  Larry

Looks great Larry, I was just thinkin ::), I have an Ultra Slug hunter that I can put a scope on that should be a good test mule for accuracy if it fits, maybe try different size O-rings for a snug fit to keep it in consistent position in the bore. Not the best platform for carry, but for accuracy potential it should be good.

thanks,

Tim

It's finally in the mail.  I had to try a few different "O" rings to get the right push fit in the bore.  Anyone doing one of these will find you can get any fit you want, you simply use rings with different thicknesses and diameters, if one is a little tight in the bore you use a smaller diameter ring so it streaches making the thickness less.  I don't know how much differences there are in shotgun bores, but this one is an easy push fit in the one I have.  I never ejected a real shell from it, the 12 gauge barrel I have is not totally functional, so the first ejection will be from Quicks gun.  It does look like it will work, but you never know.  At least if things go wrong with it things should be contained inside of a 12 gauge barrel, so a little safety factor is built in.  Hope it gets there by Friday, if I-5 doesn't flood it will, Quick is just down the street from me, but is raining really bad out here right now.  Good luck, I know I will never do another of these things, they are a pain in the butt.  Larry

Sounds like they'll have to send the mail boats from the Rogue up you guys way. I-5 is now closed in a couple spots to your north.

Not much better down here in Oregon.

I expected it here today, but the I-5 closure must have delayed it, they  probably coulda used that mail boat to navigate the water running over parts of I-5!!!  :o

Maybe tomorrow, they opened it back up finally. http://www.kirotv.com/weather/18445971/detail.html#-

Sure was a lot of happy truckers up there today when they reopened I-5. Kinda like Moses parting the Red Sea saying "Let my people go".
Now let's get a few days of sun so you can get that Trotter-EXP out there and try it out!

Got the adapter barrel today, looks really good, but upon chambering it and trying to close the action I had a .0015" gap, the adapter rim was a tad too thick for the rim cut on my USH, so a little judicious needle file work for 20 minutes and 6-7 tries and it fits perfectly flush with the chamber and locks up perfect with zero gap, tight on aluminum foil!! ;D I mounted a Weaver V3 scope, now I need to load up some ammo for the short barrel and see how it does at the earliest range opportunity.

Thanks Larry, great work!

You have found another problem with making these type of things.  When you put in a chamber adaptor, you double the places head space can build up, you have the head space built into the adaptor for the cartridge and the head space from the rifle or shotgun to the adaptor.  On this one I had .001 head space to the adaptor on the shotgun barrel I had, so I guess what would be needed is a headspace of about .003 on the adaptor to barrel and about the same on the cartridge to adaptor, this would give a maximum of .006.  I probably should have thought about this, live and learn.  Larry

I checked the headspace on the adapter with new Rem brass and it was perfect, so I couldn't remove any metal from the face of the adapter, so it left the "rim" thickness of the adapter to work with, thought maybe the rim cut in the barrel was dirty, but it wasn't, so out came the file, doesn't really take long to remove .0015" from that small surface area.  ;) I thought about chucking the barrel in the drill press and making a pilot bearing for the other end, but it would mess the nice finish up I'm sure, so the file became the tool of choice. I might have to send it back to ya to refinish it anyway.  Also thought about just sending it back for you to for an adustment!! ;D

Well, it's been a long time coming, but I finally got to shoot the adapter, went turkey scouting and gun patterning this morning, brought the adapter along in a 12ga USH with a Weaver V3 mounted for a test platform, I had bore sighted it using the look thru the bore method, first shot at 25yds cut the black at 3 o'clock, shot one more to confirm and it was right beside it. Moved the target to 50yds(paces actually, forgot the range finder  ::)) hit 1½" high and 1" to the right, figured it was good enough for a group so I just left it there, shot two more and ended up with a fantastic little group, I was very pleasantly surprised, since I was shooting a gun case folded over a cooler on top of a stump, I had a bit of a wiggle and the trigger on the USH needs to be lightened, but it still shoots very respectable!!  I had problems breaking the barrel open after each shot, had to break the barrel over my leg to get it open. Dunno if the adapter is at fault or the primer cratering that I was getting was the cause making the firing pin  hang up, I'll have to shoot it again and see if the pin is the problem, load was 12.5gr Lil-gun, SPP in Rem brass under 35gr Vmax. Anyway, I am real happy with the results!!  ;D

Well done Larry!! ;)

Me too actually, but I think with a good solid rest and a little more glass it would probably shoot close to that at 100yds. Next time I'll remove it, then reinstall it and see how consistent it is, that could be the fly in the ointment. :-\  But in reality, it would most likely be used in a shotgun with just a bead front, so I guess it just depends on how ya want to use it.  ;)

Wow! That little project came out pretty well.  I have been watching the build and that is some pretty darn good accuracy.  It will be interesting to see what it does when R&R'd and shot again.

Great work!
