bloodied my 17hmr
« on: December 27, 2008, 04:12:09 PM »

Bloodied my savage 17 hmr for the first time today. Not in the way I would of hoped but still bloodied none the less. Had a mean feral cat that was picking on our cats that I caught out behind the shop. I made a break for the house and got the 17 and ran back out there and he was still there, put one round right into his chest at 10 yards. He was DRT. hardly any blood and only a pencil sized dot on entrance. I am beginning to see why so many people love this round. Can't say how it would have done on a broadside but it did really well with a frontal, no exit.

I wish there was a feral cat season.  Then again, it's always feral cat season. ;D ;D ;D

Most of the cats I see, I also know who owns(if that is possible with a cat) them.
they still annoy the piss outta' me though. I still can't bring myself to shoot their cat.
Most cats aren't ferral around here, they just roam. My cat is like a family member
and I would truely feel sorry for someone who injured him if I found out about it.
The guy who poisoned my dog with anti-freeze had to leave town. I guess he didn't
like not being able to leave his property without running into me. I care more for my pets than
I do most people. This guy found that out the hard way. I wouldn't tell too many folks
that you are shooting local cats, anytime one disappears, you will get blamed.
and sooner or later someone will become confrontational.

I agree with you totally and I know all of our neighbors very well and what animals they have.  We have only ever shot 2 cats here, one being the one I took the other day and one about 10 years ago that almost killed our two cats.  Both of them were very mean, attacked our cats and had no owners.  We have many animals that come through and don't bother anything and we couldn't care less.  So believe me when I say I am not a pet killer and pick my shots very carefully.

There is one simple rule.

If you love your pet...keep it on YOUR property.  If you allow your pet to roam then don't get upset when someone takes care of your problem.

You all might have enjoyed the "cat" that strolled past me in my front yard this morning.

I was sitting on my walker out on my front patio enjoying the sunrise when I caught a movement to my left coming from my back yard.   It was a big tom bobcat.   He walked up to about 3-4' in front of me, casually looked up at me and twirled his tail a few times, then slowly wandered on down the yard, across the street and between a couple of houses.   Could be why I haven't seen any of the cottontail that live in my back yard since I got home from the hospital, and very few of the quail.   Coyotes in the yard are common and I've had some aggressive run ins with them, but this is only the second bobcat I've seen.

BTW, here's a kitty I shot with one of my 17HMR's back in 2002 at 2 A.M. by moonlight.   One shot back of head going straight away through the sage brush at about 75-80 yards.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Oh yes I would have much rather had the chance at one of those cats.  Unfortunately I live in Illinois and it too several years for the dnr to even admit they were here and now that they admit that they are protected.  However, there have been sightings of a couple of mountain lions around the county and they are not protected whatsoever because they are "not here".  I would love to take a cat but as of now haven't even had a chance to test out my electronic caller.  Every time I am home I have too much other stuff to do....maybe in a couple of weeks....

This would be kinda' like me shooting someone's rabbit or coon dogs when they stray onto my
property when my neighbors are running them. Just ain't done around here. thats the reason the
A-hole that poisoned my dog had to move. He didn't fit in around here any more and I convinced him of
that fact.
Shooting domestic animals gives the anti-gun folks all that much more ammo to use against
us too. It is also punishable by jail time in lots of places now.

Just so its clear.  This was no one's pet.  We asked all of our neighbors and no one claimed it, so I eradicated our problem.  I do love my pets and don't appreciate it when a wild cat comes and kills our wild rabbits and fights our cats.  We have a dog that roams our small subdivision way outside of town with no problems.  She doesn't bother the neighbors, just runs her perimeter then comes back in the house.  She doesn't even like birds on her property, but would never bother a person, cept maybe lick them to death.
