Smaller 375 Ruger Wildcats
« on: December 27, 2008, 06:39:50 PM »
Has anyone used a Rem 700 action for smaller calibre cartridges. I have a 6.5 that is not ejecting worth a dam. As soon as the case clear the front bridge the bolt drops it on the magazine. This should have been looked after at the " gunsmith's" shop but it is just one more thing that wasn't done.

I've looked at building a 6.5-.375 but came to the conclusion that the best balance for my purposes is achieved with a 6.5-06 Ackley.  More bang for the buck, less recoil, plenty good to 800 yards, and brass is easy to fabricate.

The -.375 version, if based on the .300 RCM doesn't offer much as it has less case capacity than the .264 Wby.  The full-length .375 case would provide 105g powder capacity or so, too much for my purposes.  I considered forming cases with the shoulder set back .2-.3" but just couldn't see the advantage since I'd have buy custom reamers and dies and case forming would be a pain.

The 6.5mm-06AI should provide about 72g capacity, the same as the .300RCM and about 4g more than the 6.5mm Rem Mag.

Jim, you could have a problem with your extractor. Those extractors on the mod. 700 leave alittle to be desired. I have a .411 Hawk and would not recomand that round as you must take extreem care when forming cases and even just reloading them you can bump the shoulder back to far, you only have .009 shoulder to head space on. But, Z-Hat makes a fine rifle and the other Hawk rounds won`t have that problem. If you want to take a look at the check www.z-hat.com.

Man you just have no idea how much paper work is involved with cross border shipping of rifle let alone me purchasing one. I was going to have Paul Dressell build me a beautiful full stock 6.5 X 65mm but the red taped was over the top.

I do think you are right the problem lies in the extractor system.

jim dab:  don't want to sound silly here but is the rifle scoped???  If so, it may not be your extractor or ejector but the empty case hitting the bottom of the scope or the horizontal adjustment knob.  I once (note the frequency) owned a Remington that had the same problem even after being returned to the factory for repair.  Mikey.

Mikey the case doesn't get thrown at all. The bolt just lets go of it. Thanks though.

I have but with the 3.5" magazine in the Interarms Mark X I'm building on, can't really use the longer Hawk (.280) Rem) case or even the extra space provided by a Gibbs over a more common 6.5mm-06AI.  As it is the 130 and 140g bullets I intend to use will be seated to the base of the neck and COL will be as long as the magazine can handle.

Plus the 6.5mm-06 cases can be formed from unsized .25-06 brass - just seat a boattail over a middling powder charge and shoot.  Should be able to find a relatively accurate plinking/forming load so case forming will be more than just work.
