Handi Rifle and Ruger #1

Has anyone ever experimented with putting pressure on the barrel by tightening the Allen screw that sits on the forward portion of the scope base?

 My Ruger #1 shot so good right out of the box I never found a reason to do a thing to mine.

Which "aforementioned" screw? I did not see where any screw has been mentioned either in the body of the thread or the title. What am I missing?

Not missing anything. I modified the post and left out a sentence. Sorry bout that. Many Ruger #1 owners buy an addon product called the Hicks Accurizer. What this does is allow tension to be put on the barrel to "tune" barrel harmonics for improved accuracy. Others spot weld a tab on the forearm barrel screw lug, drill and tap a hole for an allen screw and then apply pressure to the barrel in that way. Cheaper than the Hicks. I have used both methods on #1's with very good results. Made 1.5"-3" rifles into sum MOA rifles. My Handi came with a scope base that has an allen screw on the forward part of the scope base...it had been factory set to touch the barrel. I guess to "dampen" vibration between the barrel and the scope base. Seems to me that the same method that works for the #1 could work for the Handi. The basic difference would be where the pressure is applied. Plan on experimenting and see what happens.

Sounds interesting. Let us know how it turns out. The mount you mentioned on the Handi rifle in the Ultra mount, it is longer that the standard mount with the screw you mentioned. I was under the impression it was to be set at .010" clearance - not sure where I got that info. Anyway, please report on your experiment good or bad. Good Luck and Good Shooting.

The factory spec for the Ultra rail screw is .015" off the barrel, it's only there to support the overhang with large scopes, this info is in the FAQs, came direct from Gordon at Gardner. I get usually get best accuracy with a pressure point near the tip of the forend, that's covered in the FAQs too.

Appreciate that bit of info. The 30-06 Handi I have shoots heavier bullets really well...exceptional at times...but it will not shoot the 150's...tried a pressure point near the tip for the 150's and it did better but the heavier bullets went North...Rifles are interesting!

My 30-06 Ultracomp shoots 200gr NPs real good on my good days, but I've not tried it with lighter bullets, the only thing done to the forend is an O-ring added to the stud.

Working with the Hornady 180 SST right now. So far this barrel likes H4831SC and R22 better than the usual faster powder choices for the 30-06. Friend of mine has some 200g Nosler Accubond's and I plan on working up a load for them next. Man they are expensive!  He used this bullet on an elk this year. Both of us were impressed with their performance.

I buy Nosler 2nds from the Shooter's Pro shop when ever they have em, saves a LOT of money, sometimes their ABs come with orange tips, but they shoot and perform just fine!!
