Thinking of buying a SKS (pics added)
« on: December 28, 2008, 04:41:09 AM »
I am not new to GB and some of you may know me
from the TC and reloading forums.
Anyway,my neighbor has an SKS he would like to sell me.
I know nothing about them and have a few questions.
It is a Chinese, Norinco 636. all #s match.
Seems to be in good condition and not show a lot of use.

Comes with a composite tactical stock, bipod and scope rail.
These after market items are where my first problem comes into play.
The factory rear site is below the level of the scope rail making it useless.
Also the stock has an adjustable cheek welt which even in the lowest position is to high to use the factory sites.
I did not think I wanted to put a scope on it but can not use it the way it is.
The receiver cover which the scope rail is attached moves back and forth a bit
which seems like a worthless way to mount a scope since it could move POI.

What would you Guys do, suggest?

Thanks,
Mike

Replacement stocks are fairly inexpensive, as are receiver covers.  Price dependent you may be able to purchase a newer Yugo M56, said to be very good, for what you would buy this one for and the additional $ to replace the items you want.  Compute the costs and decide.  Check surplus places like Gun Parts Corp, SAMCO, SARCO, etc., and check the Shotgun News to see who is selling them and what they are charging, and that should help you decide.

The SKS is a rock solid battle rifle just the way it comes off the assembly line.  They are usually good for about 50,000 rounds.  Very handy.  Very long lived.  If this one has a chrome lined barrel it will live on for a long time, but new/unissued SKS rifles are available.  Norinco is good.  Some guys prefer the Yugo 56.

However, price dependent again I would probably snatch it up and worry about parts later.  But that's just me.  Mikey.

Any SKS scope mount is pretty much a joke, A replacement cover is cheap I'd ditch the scope mount and the stock, See if you can find a stock some one took off shouldn't be to hard to do. The removeable mag for them are usally junk to I only use the original one with stripper clips, Never fails that way.

You should be able to find most of what you need here http://www.sksman.com/index.php He has the wood and red fiberglass stocks for the Chinese SKS they may require some fitting you probably could sell that stock and pay for your parts.  As far a the 20 and 30 rd mags go there pretty much junk to in most cases.

the local pawn shop still has them for about 325.00.
the stock will add about 75.00 more.

OK, the bayonet is standard, 200 rns really isn't worth that much, the other guys are correct about the magazines and scope stuff, and prices are inflated these days.  I would offer $250 and go to maybe $300.  Just remember, it is gonna cost you a few $ to get it back to where it should be, and he may be flexible, hopefully.  Mikey.

everything said is pretty much right on , i think the cheek piece comes off the stock and as for scope mount a hack saw and a belt sander to smooth it out would work . if the reciever cover is missing and original stock and magazine  is missing it isn't really #'s matching . i'd probably go $250 as they are good shooters .
