Have you thought about a 224 Texas Trophy Hunter? It is based on a 6mm rem case which would not be quite as overbore and would increase tube life a bit.

Exactly what I was about to suggest if one must have something hotter than a 22-250.  I have one built on a mauser action and to be sure its a pretty specialized gun.  I am getting about 3650 from 80 grain bullets out of a 28 inch 1 -6 twist barrel.  Sighted in at 4 inches high at 100 yards its about 4 inches or so low at 400.  Its a great "educated" Coyote sniper though.  It will take Texas sized deer if good shot placement is used.  Easy long range gun for a woman to shoot.  Other than that I am not sure what else it might be good for...

Well if you neck down a 243 to a .22 cal, you then have a 22-250. Here's another twist on the whole .22 caliber synerio. A 45 grain hollow point tracels out a 22-250 at 4,000 fps. Best damn varmit gun around.

Enter the .223 aka 5.56 with barrel twists of 1/9, 1/8, and 1/7 that can shoot bullets up to 80 grains. Remeber that much of the variations depend also on barrel length. The issue with heavier bullets in the 22-250 is the 1/14 twist which is standard in most 22/250s.

So here's the solution, Build a 22-250 with a 1/8 twist barrel, 24 inch long and send 72 grain match grade loads at 4,000 fps. Want to have more fun, build it on an A-10 frame and have the hottest shooting .22 cal black gun around. A .22 WSSM is like a .223 on wheeties, a 22-250 built on the same platform with a long 1/8 twist barrel sending rounds out at over 4,000 fps would be like the 22wssm on super steroids.

Oh, and everything you need to load rounds are standard supplies, cases, bullets, etc. Although you may want to experiment with magnum primers to keep them hot, really hot.

Barrel life? Should be longer than a 22-06 by a lot.

Holey old threads Batman. ;)

GregPaulman, Just FYI, a 22/308 is a different cartridge than a 22-250. A 22-250 is a 250 Savage case necked to 22 caliber.

A buddy of mine has one that has had almost 1000 rounds down the tube with no loss of accuracy yet.

I do have one of these now that was built on a mauser action.  Its a pretty potent 22 caliber centerfire.  I have taken a couple of deer with it but its mainly used for Coyotes.  Mine porobably has about 700-800 rounds through it, I would have to look at the log book to be sure, but thus far accuracy hasnt yet started dropping off.  Mine was cut with a 1 in 6 twist rate as I was primarily shooting bullets in the 75-80 grain range.  This particular wildcat is building quiet a following here in Texas.  Recoil is minimal and its very flat shooting from 100-400 yards!!!

Have a look at the 22 Rem BR. It is called a BR for a reason, as it already has the best shoulder angle, the best ratio of total case length to start of shoulder from base, the best taper, and the best case length, small rifle primers for optimized ignition also...all optimized for punching holes or killing critters. No waste in powder, optimized powder charge and burn. The 22 PPC does the same job, as does the 6mm Rem BR, the 6mm PPC, the 6.5mm and 7mm Rem BRs, and there is even a 30 to top off the list.

Get a Handi 22 Hornet and rechamber it for the 22 Rem BR or 22 PPC and see if you like it. It is at the the top of my list for a Handi rechamber in my future. The only downside is cost of brass. But folks report literally dozens upon dozens of reloads with the Lapua brass.

Good luck.
