In .308 Win.- An older BLR or a later Savage 99?

Dear Guys,

   I am considering getting a lever action in .308 Winchester.  I want it to have a detachable box magazine (that drops straight out of the bottom of the action). 

   So, I have kinda narrowed it down to the older style BLR, or a later model Savage 99.

   Does anybody have any practical experience in using both rifles, so that you can compare the two?  I am interested in weight, accuracy, handling ability, ease of mounting scope, durability, smoothness, balance,  changing mags, etc.

I had an older 99 in 308 with the spool magazine.  Didn't have it long as it kicked the snot outa me with 180s, traded it for a Chevy truck.  I'm sure it was just the stock design as well as the 180 weight that made it hurt.  And the plastic butt plate.  Have a BLR, but in the 7mm-08 and with a decelerator pad, she's a real pussycat to shoot.  It mounts quick and points right where I'm looking.  It's my favorite "pointed bullet" white tail gun.  DP

I don't have a 99 in .308, but I do have a .358 and a .300savage. Cant say either kick uncomfortably, but you do know when they go off. I also have an older steel receiver straight grip BLR.
1 Accuracy  BLR wins over any Savage I have ever owned, and I have had a few.
2 Handling   I LOVE Savage 99s, but the BLR is shorter.
3 Durability  BLR has gears for operation, I have heard of problems, but have not seen them in my rifle
4 Scope      If you stay with detachable mag in the 99, either is an easy job to mount, early 99s were 
                 not factory D&T.
Style          99 all the way.
Availability    BLR wins, 99s are getting expensive, but the detachable mags aren't "collectable" just yet.

Bottom line for me, If I could only have one, it would be a 99, but I will say have shot more deer with my BLR. I own and have owned several 99s but only 1 BLR.

As posted above, the BLR's are more accurate, by far.

Both the BLR and the 99C (clip) are equally EZ to scope, as ALL detachable mag 99's were D/T'd for bases.

Early BLR and all 99C's are equal in mag access/removal/loading, but the later BLR-81's are different and a take a tad more concentration to manipulate.

Handling/length can be highly subjective, as some prefer a longer rifle, while others prefer a shorter one. YMMV.

The BLR is better finished, but some also prefer a more subdued finish, ala the M-99C. Again, YMMV.

A replacement magazine for the BLR will be easier to find and cheeper... but not cheep

I don't think there's a bad choice here. Handle them both and buy the one that you like best.

Personally I like my Savage 99 in 300 Savage but I still own a Belgium made BLR in 308.
Some will talk of the plastic gear that is in the action on the BLR but I have yet to break one or see a broken gear first hand

Dear Guys,

  Thanks for all of the replies.  Geez, most folks are having a tough time coming down HARD on one side or the other.

  I would be thinking of a pre-81 BLR.  Does anybody know whether these had the plastic gear in them or not?

  I was pretty surprised to hear that a replacement magazine for a Savage would be hard to find.  I mean, the magazine rifles were fairly recent, and they made a ton of these rifles.
