Dies for Lee Loader
« on: December 28, 2008, 03:48:55 PM »
I am on the fence about trying reloading.I have wanted to do it for some time but haven't bit the bullet yet,no pun intended.I have heard Quick and others talk about the Lee Loader being a good starter kit.I was looking through my natchez SS catalog and saw that I could get the kit for about 30 bucks.I plan to buy the 45/70 kit to start with.if I buy this kit can I buy other dies from other manufacturers and use it with this setup? I have a 280 Rem in a Handi that I would also like to try,as well as a 300 WSM.Ya'll have probably answered this question before but I figured I would ask it any way.Just wanted to know if I was gonna be able to load the other cartridges that Lee doesn't make a specific kit for. Thanks

No you cannot. The Lee Loader is a neat little kit that will only load one caliber. If you need another caliber, you have to buy another kit. If you think you are going to reload more than one caliber, you would be better served by buying one of the starter kits with a press and some dies. Much more versatile, and cheaper in the long run. If you are only going to do one caliber, and it is currently made by Lee, it is fine for a starting point. I have several, but I wouldn't spend the money if reloading was something I knew I was going to be doing very much of. If you only shoot a limited amount each year, might be fine, but if you do any volume at all, it can get old quick. I keep them more as a novelty than any thing else. They work, but I would save for better. Just so you know too, Midway has them for 18.99. HTH, Billy

PWalker,
I agree with BCall on this price, Cabela`s also has them for $18.99. Also you might check and see if Lee
still manufactures the Lee Hand Press Kit. This would allow you to purchase dies for other caliber`s and reload. If they still manufactures these kits they were only about $30-35 when I purchased mine. This is a handheld press. I reload .270 Win,.458 Win, and 7TCU  with this setup.Full length resizing is no problem with this setup. It is very easy to use , sitting up in bed,in the kitchen, etc,

I started reloading with the Lee Loader back in the 60s. Didn't take me long to graduate to a press. If you want to get into a basic kit that won't break the bank, look at the Lee Challenger Kit.(Midway) It has most everything you need to start except the dies.
