The first pistol I ever had was a 45 Kentucky kit, many years ago; got many rabbit and even a few squirrel with that pistol. Most kits are fairly simple and are a good learning experience. I was 14 when I built mine. I recently got back into B/p with a Hawkins kit for CHRISTmas 3 years ago. They're fun to assemble and finish to your liking and cheap to shoot, if you cast as bullets/balls can end up costing as much as ammo. I use recovered jacketed bullets for casting soft lead; as the cores are usually pure or very soft lead.
