The subject pretty much says it!
How hard is it to make a 30/40 KRAG out of a 30/30 barrel?

Rechamber and cut the ejector/extractor down a little. I'd seriously consider the 30-40AI if you're gonna handlload for it, it's one of the best improved chamberings.  ;)

What bullet weights and what kind of velocity would I get?

The link I posted lists 180gr @2900fps which may be a bit high, but I dunno for sure.

That is interesting.
How about doing a 307AI?

Next time!! AG lists Eabco's data, and a nominal velocity of 2920fps for a 180gr bullet, case capacity is 60.9gr H2O. They don't list a 307 Win Improved.

Well-liked by it's originator, P.O. Ackley called the .30-40 AI "one of the best of the Improved cartridges." However, owing to the cartridges rimmed design, Ackley bemoaned the lack of suitable actions to properly utilize the powerful round, finding it "a very fine cartridge for the better single-shot actions."

Ackley was particularly pleased with the power of the .30-40 Improved, stating "Loads equalling the .300 Magnum have been used for a long time by owners of rifles chambered for this cartridge."

Ackley fire-formed cases by simply firing factory .30-40 Krag ammunition in an Improved chamber.

For comparison, the 30-06 Improved holds 70gr H2O, nominal velocity of 2940fps for a 165gr bullet.

One of the series of cartridges "improved" by famed gun writer and ammunition developer Parker O. Ackley, the .30-06 Improved came on the scene just after WWII.

Ackley Improved cartridges are generally characterized by modifications which serve to increase case capacity, such as an increased shoulder angle.

Standard factory .30-06 ammunition may be fired in rifles chambered for the Ackley-Improved. This process is called "fire-forming" the brass to it's new shape and is a common practice with wildcats that simply increase dinensions of a factory offering.

Ackley claimed the same performance can be realized with the .30-06 Improved as can be obtained with the .300 H&H Magnum.

Thanks Tim!

I guess I should have pulled that barrel before it sold.
There will be others!

Looking at the website, its the 150gr bullet at 2900fps. I thought something was amiss when the 30-06 won't propel a 180gr bullet to 2900fps.
