43 below and headed for colder 60 below.
« on: December 30, 2008, 06:03:04 AM »
Well It's 43 below this morning, and expected to go on down to 60 below before the week is out.  I'm not talking about chill factor, I'm talking about straight temperature.  And some people wonder why we call this place North Pole.  Cars and trucks are making funny noises when they are started, even the one kept in the garage, as soon as it is backed out into the cold.  Makes me look forward to going to Florida.

Saturday went with a friend to run his trap line.  Got a Lynx, everything else is hold up it looked like.  Nothing else on the entire line.  Even the wolves did not seem to be traveling much.  Don't blame them I'd hold up too.

Wife just said if it gets 60 below she is not going to work.  Smart woman.

Beagles don't want to go outside.  I'll take them to the garage, half way to the door they turn around and go back to the laundry room.  Or they hide under one of the cars and refuse to come out.

Strange things happen when it gets this cold.  Brakes don't work sometimes on the trucks.  Make sure you slow down and ease across the railroad tracks.  Hit them hard and you can pop the bead right off the wheel.  The tire will be so stiff, you will then drive the tire right off the wheel.  Springs break before they bend, tie rod ends freeze up and snap before they move.  CV boots break, and universals snap.  It's best to stay home.  When I drove into town yesterday, 11 miles of dry pavement, the tires on my car warmed up.  I parked and went into the health club.  When I came out two hours later, the tires were frozen to the ice in the parking lot.  Had to gently break them loose, a little at a time so I did not tear a big chunk out of the tires.

My Ford diesel truck and the son's Chevy truck won't start after 50 below.  They stay outside.  My Mitsubishi Eclipse will start, as does our son's Suzuki Samurai, they too are kept outside.  The wife's Kia Sportage is kept in the garage.  The key pad mounted to the outside of the garage will not work after 30 below.  Our son is in the habit of going in and out through the garage.  He has also gotten into the habit of not carrying a house key with him.  Last night he came home from a hockey game and could not get into the house.  Michelle and I were already in bed.  He had to call on his cell phone and get one of us to go downstairs and open the front door for him.  Poor little guy was cold, bet he remembers his key today.

Went into town (Fairbanks) yesterday, air is so bad I could hardly breath.  There is a dark cloud hanging over the city, Wood and Coal smoke.  If we get a temperature inversion we will be in bad trouble.  EPA is already screaming about the poor air quality, and the Borough is issuing air quality alerts telling people to stay indoors.  Me, I'm staying out of town.

Uh, I think you are completely nuts for staying there.  ;D  ;D I can't imagine cold that bad having lived in the southwest all my life. 20 degress makes me wrap up like a teddy bear. In fact, now that I'm retired, I just stay in the house when it is 20 degrees. I guess it is what you get used to.

The wife just called.  She is on her way into work.  The ice fog is so thick she can only drive about 25 mph.  Tried to get her to stay home today.  When I went out to get the paper this morning, I could not see the neighbors driveway.  Visibility less than 20 yards out here where we live out in the rural area.  As she nears town it will get a lot worse.  Her visibility will be down to six to eight feet.  Won't be surprised if she comes back home before she gets to Fairbanks.

Ice Fog?  For those that have never experienced it that is a hard one to explain.  Think of the densest fog you have ever seen and double it.  Ice fog is just that frozen fog.  Once the fog freezes the ice crystals are no longer transparent.  They reflect the light from your headlights back into your face.  Ice fog is hard to see through.

I'm going back to bed, you guys have a nice morning, it's 8:24 here, and still very dark.  Won't be daylite for another two hours.

Your post makes me shudder!  A quick check out the window shows heavy frost, on the neighbors roof, the wife scraping the frost of her windshield, and no water leaks.
We have had a bit of a heat wave and it is +32 and warming up outside.  But I felt the sudden need to add a log to the wood stove, and warm my coffee.

Take care!

That is very cold!!!!!!!!! :o The coldest I have ever seen it here in SW Pa is 21 below without wind chill. It broke all of the records here. That was about 15 years ago and has never come close since. Good luck to you. Dale

Your description of 60 below just makes me cold thinking about it. I guess I will not complain when it hits -10 now. It can get down to -20 here, but that is a real rarity. I have to open up at work each day. It was down to zero and the front door was frozen shut (it had rained the day before). I had to get into the only other entrance door and I had to put a foot on the frame and both hands on the door to put it open. I just can't imagine -60, but you gave a pretty good description as usual ;)

Agree, great description as usual.
I also will no longer complain---oh yeah I will---but not as much  ;) --- about winters here in Wisconsin.

Ahhh! 43 below is mighty refreshing, but I don't think I'd be too enthusiastic about working the trap line unless the sun were shining bright. Now 60 below, that keeps me indoors.

What I wonder is the differences in your vehicles that makes some start or not at those temps?  Do you do anything special to winterize them?  Seems to me that you would need to change to a lighter oil for winter as well as different lubes/greases.  When I see houses in Alaska they look like they are on posts with a crawl space underneath... how much insulation do you have to put on your pipes to keep them from freezing up at -50?  What do you have to wear to be outside in such temps?

I've been in minus 40F and worked on the Green Chain. Never lower than that. We had outdoor plumbing !!
Had a two burner coleman camping stove and other heat producing devices under and in the engine compartment of a @#$%& VW bus to get it started. After 10 minutes of high idle  I managed to get the clutch pushed in to shift into gear.
The front tires wouldn't rotate for several seconds after moving. No suspension!

However as long as you live in a place like this, you won't have to worry about hordes of urban dead beats trying to move in on you when the Collapse happens. As much as you think about Florida or similar, think of the neighbors you might have to deal with.

I live in south-central Minnesota and this has been the coldest December in quite a while. It hasn't gotten below -20 yet though. Our coldest temps have been -40, and only rarely. -30 is much more common, and typically occurs at least a couple of times a year.

No Guns Here:

I'm in Minnesota, and we don't get the -60F seen in Alaska, and we don't have permafrost. Here, plumbing is either indoors or below the "frost line" underground. This is typically a couple of feet underground, below the point at which the ground freezes. Car tires available here are typically of M+S designation (mud and snow), which means that most people drive on winter tires year-round. In years past, when motor oils were typically thicker people used engine block heaters in their cars and plugged them in at night so the cars would start in the morning, but with today's thinner oils, it's less common to use a block heater. Most people have attached garages today, and they are warmer than outdoors because heat escapes into them from the house. For indoor heat, natural gas is the most popular, whereas fuel oil (a variant of diesel fuel) was more popular in the past. In rural areas wood furnaces are still in common use, and some are very efficient and excellent today. Electric heat is too expensive to be practical here, although some have auxiliary heat from electricity. Houses are typically wood, because there are no termites here to eat them, and because they are very practical in their resilience to the strong winds we can get. They can also be better insulated than concrete block stucco walls.

It was my understanding the first priority for garages in Minnesota was to maintain beer at the proper chill, but keep it from freezing. ;)

That's not far from the truth, and in fact some people keep refrigerators in their garages for that purpose. The refrigerators keep it cool when the weather's warm, and keep it from freezing when the weather's cold.

58 Below this morning at 6 AM

Static Electricity, Darn it hurts.  When the weather is cold the humidity in the air freezes and fall to the ground, so the humidity drops to zip.  The lower the humidity the more static builds up.  Walk across carpet and then grab the door to open it and a spark will jump from the metal door to your hand and everyone yells a big experalative usually with only four letters.  Ladies really have a problem with it.  Something they don't talk about but they wear pantie liners and are constantly going to the bathroom to change them.  Why you ask!  Well when you slide out of a vehicle, you build up a static charge.  Now you have to shut the door, and when you go to touch that door you know it is going to knock the heck out of you.  As you reach for it a spark will jump from your hand to the door, when your hand is still about one to two inches from the door.  Darn that hurts, and that is why women have to go to the restroom often.  And every once in a while guys have to go there also.  In short you can't help it, you pee.  Gives fresh meaning to the old saying about getting the something knocked out of you, literally.

We use 5W30 synthetic oil in our cars and trucks.  I use 0-W-10 oil in my snowmachine, it has a four stroke engine also.  We have block heaters on the engines of our cars, and a transmission heater on the Chevy, the other vehicles don't need to heat the transmission.  My Ford F-350 is a Diesel, so it's hard to start after Zero anyway.  And after 40 below I don't even try, too afraid I will damage the engine.  The Chevy tries to start, but just won't quite get there after minus 45.  So far my Mitsubisi starts, started this morning.  So did that little Suzuki, and it is carborated.  Vehicles with fuel injection seem to start better.  After I got my vehicle warmed up the wife asked me to drive her to work.  She finally admitted she is afraid of the ice fog.  Since I have a Doctor's appointment on Post this morning and have to go right by her office anyway I can just drop her off.  Sky can pick her up this evening on his way home from town.

Well got to go, will talk to you guys later.  Wife is finally ready.

OK got back from Post without any trouble.  Gosh it's cold!  It was only 46 below in down town North Pole, three miles away.  12 degrees warmer, and 42 below on Ft Wainwright.  Ice fog was so bad I could only drive 35mph on the highway.  Had two people pull out in front of me, they could not see me till after they tried to pull out.  No problem that is why I was only driving 35.  Feel real sorry for the guards at the gate at Ft WW.  Poor guy standing out in the cold checking IDs, had so many clothes on he looked like a pile of coats.

Got to the hospital and it was almost empty, people not coming in, just canceling their appointments.  Mine went fast.  We just reached the 4 hour mark today for sun light.  Just think in 90 days when I come back from Florida, we will be back to 12 hours of sun light a day.

You guys going to the SHOT SHOW, I'll see you there.  Rog

Hey Sourdough, you take care up there.  I understand what you are talking about, spent 4 1/2 years in Anchorage in the 70's at Elmendorf, not many times down to 50 below but a few.  Been a long time since I've heard the expression "Fog Ice", can be real tough on man, beast and machine.  I had a little VW Bug, cut off, 15 inch oversize tires, about the only thing that would be moving in those temps.

You say you are going to FL to the Shot Show, where abouts?  My son is in FL, he got broke into fishing at 3 years old on the Kenai/Russian River going towards Soldatna from Anchorage, I had to laugh at him more than once, 3 years old, pulling in 8 to 10 lb red salmon and would not let anyone help him, I had to hold onto the back tail of his coat to keep him from going into the river.  Now that he's in FL, he goes after 300 lb grouper in the Gulf.

Be careful up there.

the funny thing about cold is how quickly we adjust to it. It was -9 this a.m. and I was out shoveling in just a shirt and sweat pants. After the first cold snap of the year tho ole thermistat just resets. Course balmy MN isn't cold like Alaska. We only get a bit  on the chilly side.

Son (19) learned a lesson last night.  50 below here in our little area.  He was going over to a friends house to party in the New Year.  He wanted to drive his Chevy, because it has the cool sound system and they were going to pull it into a warehouse type building and get music off their I-pods.  He used the tray and jet heater to warm up the engine so it would start.  Then let it warm up good before starting off.  When he left the house he felt the flat spots on the tires, and the truck bouncing around.  But when he reached the main paved road, he stepped on it, instead of easing along till the tires smoothed out.  Right rear tire popped off the bead.  He drove it three blocks back to the house and parked it.  He is not happy, got to go out and remove the wheel, then take it to a shop and see if it is ruined.  Personally I think it will set for several weeks till it warms up above zero.  When it comes to the cold he is a wuss.
