vacum sealer
« on: December 30, 2008, 09:36:13 AM »
Found out that for a Christmas gift, my mother-in-law bought me a vacum food storage system.(Don't know what kind, as the wife isn't home from her mom's yet) I was thinking of using it for flour, sugar, beans, any kind of dry food. Thought that by pre-measuring out quantitys, would be easier to use later. Anybody have experience in this, as all I've read has been on websites Any real world user info would help. Thanks--gypsyman

We have had one for years but haven't used it much in a long time. I used to seal up 20 round boxes of my rifle handloads to keep my ammo dry. It worked good to have a sealed box of ammo in my daypack.

Great for keeping flower, grains, sugars, and beans from getting bugs and going bad.  Also for keping pasta good, grease/oil from going rancid.  Also great for keeping items in your bugout kit dry and ready for any emergency.  I had some ammp and reloading stuff stored in vacuum bags and had a flood.  It was under water for over a week and all was still dry and good..  Keeps tinder, matches, first-aid supplies dry and hiking treats good and ready to eat.   Love the bags and containers with vacuum lids.  Don

For powders, invest in the canisters. The bags are better for meats and cheeses.

I have had mine for 10 years. I used it more when I shoped in bulk. Now I tend to buy less more often.

The bags get expensive and leak over time. Double seal and give it a minute to cool before applying a vaccum.
