Ok guys, what did you take this year??
« on: December 31, 2008, 01:50:34 PM »
Hi, my name is Rachel from Orange county, and hunted the Catskills since I was 16. I am now in Arizona for the last 3 years and miss my home state, dearly miss hunting deer, and miss the snow & green. My hunt for deer at Bloody Basin in early October bombed out, to many ATV's, but did see quite a few Elk, and a spike bull the first week of December along the Rim with my nephew who had a tag. So what did you guys take, is the DEC reports of herd increase valid, got any pics. Rachel in Queen Creek, 20 south of Apache Junction, Az

Hey Rachel - Welcome to Graybeard. I know what you mean about missing this area, but I'll tell ya', I fell in love with Arizona and those desert mountains when I was out there last winter. Not sure if Apache Jct is near it but I drove the Apache Trail outside of Scottsdale. Awesome country! I can't wait to get back out into that area again.

Anyway, by my observations there were not many deer around this year. That is in Dutchess and Otsego Counties. Where I live her in Ducthess we normally have deer coming out our ears, but they have been relatively scarce.  I took a doe on Thanksgiving (in Otsego County) but that was it. A few guys I know took multiple deer, but I also know a lot of folks who were skunked for the year. Seemed to me it was a tough year in general.

Wow, nice buck.....  I bet your heart was pounding when you saw that big guy coming through the trees.  Queen Creek is south of the big Superstition mountain about 25 miles. The area out here is magical for hunting, if you get drawn for a tag. You have to apply for Deer, Elk, Sheep, Antelope, Bear, Buffalo, Sheep and Javalina. Mountain lion is over the counter. Coming back from a hunt with my nephew, I saw 2 Mule deer heads in the back of a small pickup. one side of the rack was well over the side of the truck, like huge, and this fall I saw an Elk rack sticking way up over a full size truck. My first Mule deer I saw was a doe, well over 200 lbs. , bouncing like you see on TV when I jumped her. I just stood there in awe watching. If you come to hunt, buy good binoculars for spotting, forget the spotting scopes unless you are trying for sheep. The amount of ground in national park for hunting is amazing, so huge, and you find ruins of early American Americans in many areas. The ground is covered with lots of stone, so walking is tough in many areas. Elevation is about 1500 ft. where I live, and 7,700 ft. where I took a pic of a bull Elk coming through a camp ground I was staying in. One huffs, and puffs some if you older like me. Happy New Years to you guys.

Not much time to hunt this year.  Just one but it was the first with my NEF USH so I was stoked.

Teaching your daughter hunting, I love it, and thank you. A deer with a bow too, gosh life is good to you.

What a beautiful buck with the snow coming down. That guy would be a monster here compared to a Cowes deer. They are whitetails, but small like a N.Y. fawn

Hey woodsdweller - Congrats! Looks like you were busy this year. Where was that bow deer of yours? Looks like a lot of snow! I don't remember that much snow around here this year in bow season.

And rlelvis - How do you like that Handi? What caliber is it? I am thinking of getting one in .308. Nice buck too.

Not really trying to hyjack this thread but...

It is the 12ga Ultra Slug Hunter.  How do I like it?  Jest about the best all around deer gun I have owned (out of dozens).  When you couple the accuracy with the terminal performance there is nothing better, oh and a good price too.  The only way I would put it down is if I were anticipating shots to consistently be over 150yds, even then it will hold its own to 200 and in this part of the country most shots are well below that.  It will consistantly hold sub 3/4 MOA 3-5 shot groups.

Not sure of the area you are in but if in the upstate email/pm me.

Sorry - didn't meanto hijack the thread either but I had to ask about that gun! Love those guns! sunshinegirl started a great thread and was just repsonding to what was in it. sorry sunshine girl!

I am in Dutchess, but I mostly hunt in Otsego (I don't remember getting anywhere near 18" of snow and that's pretty close to Greene)

I took a nice doe with the bow, and a dandy six-point with my TC Encore Muzzleloader. Passed on numerous smaller bucks, but had a great time!
