HEARING PROTRACTION??? Well I guess i can wiggle my ears..can you..huh?? what??

LOL actually i use walker quads also.Especially coyote hunting here in the east i can hear them
coming in alot sooner.

I've been using the surefire sonic defenders. They work well for me. They have a progressive decibel reduction so they don't mute normal conversations. I work in construction and one thing that I love about them it that I have no problem talking on a cell phone with them in. It seems silly but taking plugs in and out gets annoying if you're getting alot of calls during the day. They cost about $12 a pair at the local gun shop. But there rubber so they can be reused for a long time. If a was shooting a braked cannon at a covered range I would put muffs on over them but for most shooting they offer good protection.

When I first started shooting, just a regular set of muffs. Then got into IHMSA compitition. Try standing under a covered firing line,15 shooters, 5 shots each in 2 minute's. Smallest caliber might have been a .357. Most were 10'' T/C's, in 7tcu,30/30's, and alot of XP100's, in 7br or .308. HUH, what ya say.
Didn't take long, and I had some German artillery ear plugs, and I also used a set of Peltors that were the highest rating I could find. I found out, that if I used that combo on the rimfire line, it helped my concentration out, and my scores increased. gypsyman

I had used a pair of Peltor electronic muffs rated at 26 for several years. Last week, at the River Bend GSSF match, some folks were doing custom molds. I had a Walker Game Ear II that I could never use 'cause the foam plug wouldn't stay in. So I got a set of custom moulds and they hooked up the Walker to them - now I'm fat, dumb and happy and don't have the muffs in the way with my rifle or shotgun. I'll still use the muffs and the moulds when I'm under the shooting bench cover.

Custom plugs...no electronics when hunting. I already have 30% high frequency hearing loss from shootinga .22 without protection as a naive youth. Plugs AND Peltor 10's on the range. Gotta get some electronic muffs.

Foam ear plugs with the cord that keeps them attached. All of my hunting is done from a stand so I put them in when my target strolls in. I made the mistake of shooting a 357 mag without hearing protection when I was in high school. I've never shot, even rimfire, without hearing protection since then.

Although I understand and "hear" what most of you are saying,I do not and never will use any hearing protection for hunting. Just the way it is. Think about it......im 45 YO and married 25+years.....don't I deserve some peace and quiet now?

Relax guy's...for target shootin' I do use magnum muffs.......I was a 4 deuce mortar gunner and nothing is louder than that,and you needed 1 ear free to hear the call info.....my ears ring 24/7 to this day,although I "hear" there is a pill to fix that

Years ago I used to live in Oregon and did my target shooting in the Cascade mountains. One Spring the deep snow remained longer and forced everyone to shoot in a local rock quarry instead of the usual private spots in the woods. I had 2 centerfire rifles and a handgun with me. A guy rolls up with a 7 MM magnum rifle and his 2 kids have rimfire rifles.

I waited for them to put on their hearing protection, and waited, and waited, before I pulled the trigger. They never used anything, I had my muffs on, and still they did their thing without any protection at all. His 2 boys looked like they were around 11 years old. I was amazed that anyone would tolerate being around 3 centerfire rifles without hearing protection, especially a father trying to get his kids into shooting. It would be interesting to see how their hearing is now!

At one range I go to I see people all the time not wearing hearing protection. A while back a guy showed up with a 15" Encore in 30-06 and no protection!! Last Sunday a guy brought his 4 daughters out to the range to shoot and not an earplug in sight. Its hard to imagine that in 2009 there are still people who pay no attention to such a simple precaution. When I go to the range I wear tight fitting ear plugs with muffs over the top and I gladly can't hear a damn thing!

I got the Howard Leight Impact Sport muffs with sound amplification yesterday and did some preliminary testing last night

they are light, compact and appear to work quite well
I haven't shot a gun with them yet but did some testing with them and they sure seem like they are going to work great

I just bought some cheap $26 hearing aid type protection @ Dunham's. It blocks everything over 85db. I was surprised that they worked for being so cheap.

indoor shooting range, the ultimate test
they worked great
with lots of guns going off and me shooting a very hot 270

Yep, that is what I have used for the last couple of years for competition and in the field. They work great.

I like ear muffs cuz they can also give your ears a chance to warm up a little if you need to thaw them out.

I just bought the cheap ones from Harbour Freiht and they seem to do ok for now.
