Handi Lifespan
« on: January 01, 2009, 06:21:26 AM »
Was pondering (not to be confused with pandering) as to the life span of Handi receivers using the higher pressure loads, such as 308,35 Whelen,270,280 etc. I am contemplating building a light weight elk rifle using a Handi Sb2 frame but I don't want a rifle that will shoot itself apart/ loose after a short time.
The finished project will be a 338 Federal with a 23" stainless barrel and brake. I have the equipment available to completely build a new from scratch barrel and lug.It will not be a stub project and will utilize a much stronger/stable forearm mount. It's very nice having a fully equipped machine shop and my disposal, but I don't want to go to all the work building a rifle that will not last !

If you got all the tools and materials build one using a titanium lug and put a titanium pin in it and it should stay tight forever ;D Kurt

The lug & forearm mount will be cnc machined with dovetails for centering prior to tig welding to the barrel. by following proper welding procedures it will not stress the barrel at all.

338 Federal would be a verrrry in-ter-est-ing cartridge in a Handi. ;)  I think I could be persuaded to let go of a few coins to try that out. ::)  DP
