I think I hate Lowe's
« on: January 01, 2009, 12:03:11 PM »
Painting really isn't my favorite project but my half scale Napoleon was really in need of repainting.  So had Lowe's mix up a quart of paint using the Carriage Paint Formula that was posted a while back by Double D.

American Traditional latex semi gloss
Base: B4-19908 Quart.
101 1 ounce, 14 shots
105 46 shots, 1 half shot
111 34 shots
113 2 shots, 1 half shot.

It turned out a really pleasing shade of dark green and looks great.  I was just about finished painting the black trim (hardware) when I noticed a couple areas that could use a little touch-up.  So went back down to Lowe's and had them mix up another quart.... I took the label from the first quart that showed the formula that it was mixed with.  Got back home and started on one of the areas that needed a little more paint.

Oops... something just doesn't look right.  Believe it or not, the new quart of paint supposedly mixed with the same formula as the first one was drying a DARKER shade !!!!

I am NOT happy.... now instead of just touching up a couple of small areas I have to repaint the entire carriage !!!!

Lowe's.... I think I hate you.

Let me start by saying that I work for Home Depot and don't like Lowes myself. But I am going to defend them on this. No two quarts or gallons are alike. Even if they are the same formula. Changes in the amount of white in the base or even a slight difference in the amount of pigment dispensed. That is why when painting a room with more then one gallon you are supposed to mix the two together or stop in a corner. Then start the next wall with the next can. You have experienced the difference first hand and for them not educating you on the proper way I apoligize.

Both print outs of the formula match? yes there may be tone differences between cans but it should be very slight especially with computer generated pigments,

I used to mix paint the old fashioned way where you manually measured & added pigment and even with that if you were paying attention the difference should not be blatant sounds like someone transposed a number probably with the black pigment.

Yes, the printout labels matched as to all the numbers and such

You know how paint always looks a shade or two lighter before it drys.... well, the new can of paint wet matched the shade of the previous can dry.  To me that is more than just a slight difference.

E.D.

Just curious. Did they use the same "Base" to mix both of them? The cans should be marked B1, B2 and such.  I notice that the mix you posted was a "B4". I've had them use the wrong base before and it throws the color off.

Yes, the base cans were the same... should have had them make a gallon instead of a quart the first time.

Lets see ED how long ago did you paint that gun?  And how many times has it been out in the sun?  Time and sun bot will change paint color.

Yes, prolonged exposure would change the color... but not in just 3 days.

Well, the second quart should be enough to do the whole carriage since the first coat sealed it.

I don't like Lowe's, or Home Depot!

How many acres of junk do you have to search for some
widjet, fitting, or other little thing.

There's never any help when you want them.

Either one (Lowe's, or Home Depot) means doing some other junk house

job.

Lets paint the kitchen, new tile, plant some trees, etc. etc.

That's just time, and, or money, away from the shop.

Females just don't understand priorities!

Sorry, not supposed to complain about venders here! >:(

Kap, sounds like you are being over-run with honey-do's... honey-do this, honey-do that.  My honey-do list has like 3,714 projects and I am currently working on #18 I think.

Just finished repainting the repainted carriage... why does that sound so redundant?  Now it's a slightly darker shade of green and I still have half a quart left of the current shade paint.  Will start on touching up the hardware again and then hopefully be pretty much finished.

Sorry, Ed I thought you were touching up old paint.

Honey-do's?  Another for the banned word list. Actually I am a bit nervous about that list. After I have my knee surgery what will I use for excuses?

and I am currently working on #18 I think.
....

I'm working ONLY on #1, then when it's done I'll be working on #1, ....

Too scared to count how many there are.

AND, Lowes treated me right - helpful folks and found everything I needed.

They've even given us DISCOUNTS (our church) when we asked - not 10% but 20% .

If you don't ask, you may not get.

Ya know, I've never asked.  But at 61, I'd put together a "PROJECT" and ask for the discount!

They're looking for community good will - attach a name of a "GROUP" with it.

Why don't you just consider the 2 tone paint job as camouflage and quit while you are ahead? :-\

I have considered that.... next time will have them make up a gallon even if I only think I will be needing a pint.  Got all the detachable hardware painted, next is painting the non-removable hardware.  Hopefully will make smoke and fire by next weekend.

Along the same lines:
I met an old line painter who worked for Disney until his heart failed . He was the color mixer for Anaheim. When he started mixing colors for the then new Disneyland He added a secret ingredient to each barrel, (black paint) When they fired him no one else could match the colors! so they hired him back! ;D

I must be a real nerd, because I like looking around at Home Depot, etc., especially the tool departments.

Santa Dave,

I guess this would be described as being strongly pro-active in regards to one's own employment security.
