Took the CZ 52 to the range today
« on: January 01, 2009, 01:31:57 PM »
I had not shot my CZ 52 in quite a while, so it came with me to the range today.
It was shooting pretty good with some Previ 85 grain FMJ ammo. A couple of
people at the range came over and asked about the gun. "Man! That is one loud
pistol! What is it?" When I told them it was a CZ 52 they said, "I've heard of those.
I didn't know if they were any good because they were so cheap to buy." So I let
several people run a couple of mags of ammo through it and they walked away
impressed. I had a target frame set out at 15 yards with some 5" Shoot 'N See's
and one of the guys turned in some nice groups. Way better than I did! I think
he wants to get a CZ 52 now! He couldn't stop talking about it! ;D

I have one question for you Bob.  Were you able to find the brass?

My 52 flings that brass a good 20+ feet and then trying to find it all in the grass, aaarrg.  Finally rigged up some fiberglass screening around a pvc frame, problem solved.

It is a nice pistol though, little heavy but then again it's STEEL and not some polymer.

Czech_Too,
Out of the 100 rounds fired I only lost 6 empties. I spent a bunch of time looking for them
though. Several people came up to me and handed me empties that they had come across.
Some of them were way away from where I was shooting. I had no idea the brass was ending
up all the way down where they were! :o You have a good idea with that screen setup. Next
time I'm going to get several target frames and make a barrier to stop those empties from
flying all the way to China. Have you shot any Romanian 7.62X25 through yours? I'm wondering
how accurate it is compared to the Previ. At least you don't have to worry about chasing
down the brass with it. It is mildly corrosive, but a few patches with some ammonia based
window cleaner through the barrel takes care of that.

Robert,
The only ammo that I've put thru it has been W-W white box and after that reloads.  I don't recall what the accuracy was and that was at 25 yards anyway.  Not the range I would 'expect' to be using it at.

Czech_too:  try some Sellier and Bellot 7.62x25mm.  Dang fine stuff and brand new manufacture.  Reloadable, too.  There is also a FNH brand out ther and I think you can find it on one of the Makarov sites.  Better than that is Ron Reed who manufactures a number of different loadings for the 7.62x25mm and is one of our sponsors and moderators.  His banner is right up top here.

Beware the use of mil-surp 7.62x25mm as much of it is higher pressured ammo made for submachine guns and will take a CZ52 or a Tokarev right apart.  Ron Reed can probalby give you the best and most accurate advice on that issue.

Accuracy - mil-surp is not usually all that accurate.  I have mic-ed 7.62x25mm bullets from a number of different mil-surp makers and found a wide variation in diameters, ranging from .305-.307, with only the Sellier and Bellot coming to a honest .308 and that stuff is way accurate out of my Tok.  HTH.  Mikey.

Like Mikey said, the S&B's are good. I've used them quite a bit. Winchester also factory loads it, but it is loaded I think by S&B with Winchester brass overseas. Every time I've used eastern bloc surplus ammo I get a lot of mis-fires, about 50% of each box. I had some Czech surplus and the primer would collapse when the firing pin made contact.

I've had some FTF with surplus stuff. S&B has been 100% in mine.  Anybody fired the Wolf Gold 85gr JHP load?  Stuff is boxer primed brass.  Sure looks pretty.

The Wolf Gold is made by Previ Partizan. I haven't shot the JHP's, but I do shoot the
Previ FMJ's and they are boxer primed as well. They shoot real good and are fairly
reasonable price wise. I bet those JHP's would be devistating.

Sellier & Bellot ammo has also been very accurate in both my 7mm mauser and swede mauser rifles too.  Priv-Partizan manufactures ammo for wolf gold and FNM, they also manufacture the brass for grafs too.  Sellier & Bellot manufacture ammo for winchester its there metric ammo.

Either way we can beat the quality of the yugo brass its the best that i have reloaded so far.

The Bulgarian 7,62x25 ammo is the hotter machine gun ammo thats been proven to blow up the barrels/slides too.  The Romanian 7,62x25 ammo is suppose to be the best stuff right now for surplus ammo.

I recently bought 504 rounds of Romanian 7.62x25 (7 boxes) from J&G Sales.  My CZ-52 was 100% with it after 3 boxes so I ordered a sealed full tin of 1200 and some to stash for a rainy day.  Inspecting fired cases showed no cracks or splits.  In the past I’ve tried a few bundles of the Bulgarian ammo and every case cracked or split to some extent.

I use Wolf hollow points in my 52 and my 7.62 Tok Handi rifle. The rifle eats coyotes and deer for breakfast in the thick Central NH woods. The S&B fmj took down a 285 lb black bear sow with a clean head shot at about 25 feet. I almost wish I had used the pistol for that one!

Guy,
What caliber did you start out with in your Handi to end up with 7.62X25?
That would be a fantastic round for varmints. For only an 85 grain bullet
it can do some serious damage! :o

Dude! That would be wicked in a Handi! Could we move over to the NEF/H&R
Center Fire Rifle Forum  here at GBO to discuss this further? I have several Handi's,
but none in 7.62X25. That would be beyond awesome! ;D I'm going to post
over there right now.

I've had very good results with the S&B stuff in both my CZ 52 and my CZ 82 in 9mm Mak.  100% and pretty good accuracy as well.  Only problem with the CZ 52 is those minuscule sites!
