Would like your input TCR 87 or ruger no.1
« on: January 02, 2009, 04:34:41 AM »
From those who have owned one or have a good knowlege on the subject given the fact that 83 and 87 are no longer produced and the price on used is way up there and parts might be a problem which one would you rather have a 83-87 or ruger number one? I have only seen 3 83's at gun shows and none were compleat and price was 875.00 and they showed a lot of use and no care. I also see a lot of number ones both new and used and price range is 575 to 750 depending in cal. most new are priced at 675 to 700.
Then there is the mossberg ssi-1 which is a well made gun nice wood and is a break open much like the 83-87. Really not interested in barrel changing as I have contenders and encores for that. I have 2 ssi-1's and a Ruger 1, with limited founds for toys I need to get the best for my money. Your thoughts.

Since they're no longer made, I surely wouldn't be getting a TCR rifle.  If would be a good recipie for frustration when something broke.

Instead of making their stupid Icon, T/C should have resurrected the TCR rifle.

I've had more than one TCR and Ruger No 1, and I did handle the Mossburg SSI-1 prototypes when they were first announced at a SHOT Show (but never looked at them again).   Both the TCR and Ruger's served me well at the time I had them, but then I discovered the High Walls and Low Walls, they became my first love for single-shot rifles.    And they shot the pants off the TC's,TCR's and Ruger's.   I had both Browning B-78's and 1885's (no Winchesters).   They would still be my first chocie today for a single shot, even over a one shooter bolt rifle.   Yes they cost more money now that they have been discontinued and more than a TCR/No 1, but are worth every penny of it IMO.  Parts?   Never came close to wearing anything out in these Brownings, and there isn't much that could break.   Some of mine used in the digger fields were shot a bunch over the years and still were as good as brand new (and still looked new as well).

Some day I will have a Number 1 Ruger.  I have never had one, but have wanted one for a while.  I was so excited a couple years ago when I saw a used one with a price I could afford in a gun shop, but it was a .458 Mag.  That would really thump the groundhogs!  It stayed there.

I liked the TCRs also, but now I don't think there really is a choice between the two.

Both!!  I have a TCR 83, with 3 barrels. And it would be one of the last ones I would let go of. (But then I can't pick a first) I also have a #3, not a #1. It would also be one of the last to go.

I can't understand the concern about breakage. Not much to break. Innards mostly. (And I've heard that some small parts are still available from TC if you ask real nice.) But then I don't beat on my TCR. Differences? The TCR is a break action single shot. Rather elegant actually. Similar to a NEF or an old Savage 219. But a little more refined, maybe a lot. Ruger#1, built like a tank. Strong, rugged, still fair looking, classic style. Not as well refined, a rifle built for a purpose. Yes they can be made very handsomely, but need a little dressing up to get there.

Again, both!!

And Keith, I did the same thing once, turned down a nicely priced #1 because it was a 458. Ooops. You can always download it some. Makes it easier on that expensive brass.

Sort of the same as the difference between the Contender/G2 and Encore.   Brownings first copy of the originals was the B-78 for several cartridges from the 22-250 to 45-70.   They replaced it with the 1885's... the 1885 Low Wall is a smaller, lighter frame/rifle for several light to medium pressure cartridges (22 Hornet to 260 Rem plus 357, 44 and 45LC) and very close to the old Winchester's.   The 1885 High Wall is bigger and heavier duty for a wide range of cartidges from the 223 to 45-70 plus the BPCR model that handled black powder cartridges from the 40-65 to 45-90.

Thanks Ladobe, that answers the question, I had no Idea what it meant but kinda thought it might have something to do with size of gun. This is a great forum some one always has the answer. I was hoping someone did not come back with one is higher than the other. :) :) Keep up the fight we are pulling for you.

Deacon,
I met you in line at the last Sooner gun show in Tulsa, anyway, I once had a TC83 with 7 Rem Mag, 22-250, and 308 Winchester barrels. I sold the set up when I went back to OSU to complete my BS Degree in 1995. Tell you the truth I have been in mourning ever since. It was the prettiest gun I ever had and the way the stock is built the recoil from the hard kickers is not as bad as other guns. All three barrels would shoot sub moa with factory CoreLocts  at least at 100 yards. 7 Mag was my deer rifle for years and the boy shot several with the 308. Unfortunately for me the value for this rig has about tripled since I sold mine. I had a Ruger #1 in 300 Win Mag for a while and preferred the TC 83. It was nice to meet you at the Tulsa show, I bought a 12 inch 30/30 hunter barrel from Ed that day but don't have it scoped yet. BTW  where are you from?

Hi jw/ok yes I remember talking to you at the show. I live just south of Tulsa just outside the small town of Morris. Its always nice to meet the guys from the forum. By the way sooners is having a gun show in Ok city Tomorrow so may see some more members there. I was glad to get your input on the TCR'S. Ed is really nice guy to deal with. I may run on to a good TCR yet every one who has had one has great things to say about them

I own a TCR-83 and love it.  Bought it as a 7MM Mag, then got a .243 barrel.  Liked it so much I got a 22-250, then a 30-06.  When they came out with the mag conversion in 1992 I sent mine in and had it converted.  I also got the .338 Win Mag barrel at that time.  The .338 has killed many Moose and Caribou.  I have also shot a few Black Bears with it.  Still looking for a Grizzly.  Have also taken sheep with the 7MM, and lots of Wolves and Coyotes with the .243.  Have taken Mulies and Whitetail in New Mexico and Texas with the 30-06.

LOVE that set trigger.

Also got the 3 1/2 inch 12ga barrel.  Use it for turkey in Tennessee.  Shot 3 1/2 inch shells once, won't do that again.  I now use 2 3/4 or 3 inch, they are enough.

Well my search has came true. I found a TCR 87 with a 223 barrel and a extra barrel in 22-250 both had what I would call the Buelher or Redfield base and rings or may be TC copied after them any way fellow said he had not used it in 10 years. gun is very nice would rate it a 9 at least but I am pleased so that is what counts. now I have too many 223 cal barrels or rifles. can you have too many? Really like the way the barrels go on the tcr87

Since that question is not allowed here you may want to ask it in a PM.

Check with SSK I think they still make barrels for the TCR 87.
I wish Ruger would come up with a No1 that can swap barrels.
