15" encore pistol?
« on: January 03, 2009, 11:34:21 AM »
Hello all. I have a 15" .308 encore pistol that can be a real beast, but I can manage it. So in comparison of recoil, I'm wondering a couple of things about the muzzleloader barrel. Been thinking about trying one and heard that most who shoot them, only use 50-70 gr's of bp. People seem to complain about the excessive recoil and say that any more powder than that is a waste anyway. Is this true? How does the ml pistol compare to my .308 in recoil? Would the use of more powder, say 100-120 gr's of bh 209 be a waste of powder in a short barrel? Anybody shoot one through a chrono and see what diferent loads do for the gun?

I'm very interested in this barrel as of lately, especially with the new blackhorn 209 out and about. Another thing I was wondering was whether t/c put out a 209x45 pistol barrel? If you were to hunt with a 15" ml pistol, What caliber and load would you choose out to 100 yards? And would 150 yards be ethical with either, so long as my ability proves satisfactory? Any comments and info are welcome. Thanks.   jammer

80 hrains of 3F under a .50 caliber sabot and a 240 grain bullet is where I'd start.

TC never made a 15" 209x50 barrel , you need to make your own .

I think he meant 209x45.

Thanks for the responses. Since we're talking inside of 100 yards, and 100 grains or less, is it likely the .45 would have the edge in efficiency and performance of the 2 calibers?

Ive got one too, and I would start where I ended up ....50 grains of FFFG Goex black powder and a 240 grain T/C cheap shot lead bullet.
Recoil is manageable and it shoots great groups. It will also kill a whitetail easily out to 50 - 70 yards.

I started with 80-85 grains of powder and the recoil was an eye opener. I would think that flintching would be a major concern at this level or higher.

One other recomendation is to get some rubber grips to allow you better control of the gun when it is fired, I have the wood grips and it is hard to hang on to.

I am almost positive that I saw one at a Tulsa gun show. was for the encore but I passed on it. It was very nice with forend and rod and was 209-45 cal but fellow wanted 350.00 for it and I thought that was a little steep.

Thanks for the advice 2 Bears. :) I have a .308 pistol that came with the wood grips and couldn't agree more. I did buy the rubber grips for it, and while it helped some, it was still a beast to shoot. I found that toning it down with reduced recoil loads from remington made it much nicer to shoot.

I lost interest in the barrel and traded it to a friend. Only to wish I still had it and bought another one recently. I'm a glutten for punishement I guess? ::) So then, with 80 grains is the recoil of your ml pistol up there with the 15" .308?

I am thinking I might like a 209 x45 best as a pistol. If t/c wants too much I'll just look for a used rifle barrel and customize. Thanks.

Yes , it is on the harsh side.
That is where I started at and after 1 or 2 shots I backed it down to 50 and find it good to shoot. I wouldn't shoot anything over 250 grain bullet as the recoil will jump back up on you.

I paid about 275 for mine and it came with the wood grip and forearm, a new scope and the t/c scope mount. BUT the factory custom barrel will run you at least that much (but will be new) then you will need a forearm for it and if I rember right the custom shop sells them for about 60 bucks. You can find used ones for about 200-250.

Happy hunting....

I wonder if I was to find a .45 caliber rifle barrel and modify it to a pistol, is it safe to tap necessary holes for the forend? I can do all the work myself including making the forend. so other than the price of a barrel, it won't cost me anything more than time. Bad idea?

You could....BUT it may be cheaper to just order what you want from the T/C custom shop. Its really not that bad for a price. I checked with them before I bought mine and it was not too much more for a new one over a good used one.
Then you have NO WORRIES about how it will shoot. If you hack a barrel off and crown it, what are the chances it will shoot poorly?

As far as powder charge goes, I doubt a 15" barrel could effectively use much over 65/70 grains or so.  I did a test over the chronograph with Triple 7 in my 22" Omega X7 shooting 300 grain bullets in Harvester short black sabots.  Here are the velocities I got with various loads (average of three shots with each load).

Charge       Average Velocity      Change

 75 grains                 1522 fps                              ---
 85 grains                 1575 fps                          +53 fps
 95 grains                 1624 fps                          +49 fps
105 grains                1719 fps                          +95 fps
115 grains                1710 fps                            -9 fps
