17 HMR or 22 Hornet?
« on: January 03, 2009, 03:01:27 PM »
OK I am wanting a barrel for a small caliber small case round in a 16 inch barrel so it could be used as either handgun or carbine. This will be mostly for low recoil practice. I have been interested in the 17hmr since it came out. I have thought several times about getting a rifle chambered for the rimfire but I already have a rifle in 22 Hornet and the ballistics are so close I haven't convinced myself I need one. (I know need doesn't mean much when buying a new gun) Now that I am wanting to get into shooting the contender more I am back at looking into one or the other. I am already set up to reload for the hornet and it can be reloaded for less than a box of 17 hmr's. For the 17 I would also have to buy some new cleaning equipment (rod, brushes, etc.)

Now for the question. Why would you buy one over the other if you were in my shoes?

I have the 17hmr and 22 hornet as well as 204 ruger so I guess you need to ask what will I realy use it for. I love the 17hmr for plinking or target shooting but if I were to do some hunting then the hornet would get my vote and as you are already set to reload the hornet to me at least would be your best bet money wise.
I too have a 22 as well as a 22mag and I would rather choose the mag over the 17hmr bullet weight wise but in the long run you will need to choose what is best in your case. I shoot the hornet more than the 204 because of the ammo cost. MTCW

I have a 17 HMR in a 23" Contender and love it For groundhogs and Squirrel Hunting . I use 20 FM J's for squirrels and take head shots If I can get hem. If not shoulder shots will do with  Very little Meat damage. I use the TNT's Or V-max for Hogs.
I had one in a 14" Barrel But didn't much care for it.  At $10 to $15 a Box It can get expensive to shoot If punching a lot Of paper.
I don't have a 22 Hornet  But do have a 221 Fireball. For Punching paper and Wistlepigs I'd Pick the 221.
For that fact I'd pick a 22LR for the squirrels.   So Go with the Hornet. Load for it and Have fun..

Because its there Bruce.   ;)

With three 17HMR's, three 17HM2's and all but two of my Hornets being 17 Ackley Hornets, I think it's pretty clear which way I lean on these.  IMO each one of them is a substantial improvement over the parent cartridge they emulate - FOR MY USES.   Notice I said for my uses folks - yours may vary.  It's been hashed to death hundreds of times so I am not getting into any more debates over this.   A search will give you hours (days) of reading on the subject Bruce, especially over at Rimfire Central.

One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

In my area of PA I am limited to rimfire for small game.  Every groundhog that I've shot with the 17HMR just fell over dead.  Can't ask for better performance than that.   However, in your case the Hornet makes better sense.  Reloading gives you many more options to tailor a load to your exact specifications and it is cheaper than factory Hmr's.  But you can never have enough barrels!  Garfield

No doubt or second thoughts for me, the 22Hornet. Have you considered the 17MACH2 for a cheap to shoot plinker and small game getter. Shooting 1900FPS from my 14" barrel Contender it is extremely accurate and one heck of a squirrel getter.
