New 445 supermag!!
« on: January 03, 2009, 07:43:27 PM »
Hey guys, first post here. just found out about this site while on Danwessonforums, and glad I did. anyhow, I just recently aquired a Monson Made 445 Supermag in SS. I traded a Ruger Mini 14 Target for the pistol, dies, 125 rounds and a case of 1000 new starline brass, and I have to be honest when I say I did it only because i knew these pistols were hard to come by. anyhow, I took it to the range today for the first time, and all I can say is WOW! I thought of this as an investment, but now I think it is my favorite pistol! The gun had only 50 or so rounds through it (according to the original owner) and I doubled that today. Im in love.

So now that I have this new toy, I have a quaestion for you pro's. I want to scope this pistol and need advice on what scope you all recommend. Price range is in the 200 or so range. Also, what mount? I read B-square mounts were great, but they no longer make them and are hard to come by. What about Buehler's? Does the Buehler clamp on like the B-square, or does it need additional work?

Thanks for the info, and ill be sure to post pics of the pistola when I get a chance.

Here are pics of the pistol. When I bought it, it had a standard 8"VH barrel. I picked the gun up on 12/30/08 and has since added everything else you see in the picture. Talk about an addiction!

Congrats!
I have a B-Square mount for my Monson 445 also a Leupold M8-2X. That is about the best set up I know of. Maybe start searching the auction sites? I prefer shooting without the scope and only used the scope for load development. One of these days I may need a scope, but as long as I can see the front sight I'll use the irons ;D

Did the previous owner tell you when he bought it? Mine was among the first stainless ones, that I bought new in 1990.

He couldnt exactly remember, but I have the original receipt for the case of brass, and it was dated in the beginning of 1990. The serial number is SO000116x if that helps at all.

That is a pretty early one too! Mine has Elgin T. Gates initials then 445S11X, I wish I knew how many were made with his initials in the serial number.

It was an option from Dan Wesson, I think they were called the Silhouette grip. I have the blocky ones too. I have the same set except they have checkering on my .357SM. Probably the most comfortable is the Pachmayr Gripper if you can find them. I have a set on my 722.

Very nice gun!
If you don't mind me asking (and I know it's none of my business) what did the gun set you back.
I have always wanted one.
Right now I own DWs in 45 colt,41 mag and my baby in 32-20, all blue.
I also have a H&R HANDI rifle in 445 along with a 12" contender barrel.

Altogether with everything you see there, I am into it for about 1700.00. What you dont see is a brand new case of 1000 starline brass, 150 or so loaded rounds that came with the gun, and two sets of dies. I love it, and am very happy with it!!

Welcome to Graybeards...

Great gun you have.  Looks like you will be reloading but if your looking for ammo made my a DW guy looks at Reeds Ammo  www.reedsammo.com

To answer your question for a mount I like the Weigand Mount and Rings and it is what I have used without issue.
For a scope you should spend the time a look for a Leupold 2.5-8 in silver there are a few blemished ones close to your price.
