SPOTTED RECEIVER ON 336
« on: January 04, 2009, 01:38:45 AM »
I picked up a stray 336 in a pawn shop.(Cant help myself....Hey some people collect stray animals) it has some spots on the receiver, more like stains, that I would like to remove, The barrel beside the rear sight probably  had some rust that someone removed but also about half the bluing. The stock is unblemished and the barrel inside is clean and it is a real good shooter. Anyone have suggestions about removing spots and touching up the barrel, I haven't done any kind of this work so was wondering if someone could give some tips or ideas.

Don't know what kind of spots are on the receiver so start with a soft rubber pencil eraser and see what that does. Just work it like you're erasing a mistake off a piece of paper.  Blow off the residual and wipe it down with an oily rag, let set for a while and see what it looks like.

I agree with Oldshooter....try the pencil eraser first.  I have tried this and it works pretty darn good!  I would use steel wool only as a last resort.  Too much, and there goes your bluing.

Thanks for the tips ! Will definitely try the eraser and if necessary the steel wool.
Thanks for the replies, Randy

I have successfully used a product called Flitz. It says on the bottle it's OK to clean bluing and I've used it on several rifles, it really seems to bring out the depth in the blue. I don't scrub with it, I use it like a polish with pressure as needed and never had a problem.

I have a 336 with "spots" all over the outside of the barrel although the magazine tube, receiver, and lever are just fine.  It was made in 1972 and I bought it used.  Like yours it doesn't look like actual rust and you can't feel any roughness.  It just looks crumby.  :o

But it shoots just fine.  I left it alone.  Maybe I'll just get it reblued some day.

I agree with the crumby look, I really like this 35 Rem. Will try to remove the spots but will continue to shoot this rifle. will make spot removal my winter  rainy day project.

Thanks, Randy

Fine steel wool with machine oil on it will take care of the bad places..never use s.w. without the oil on it though...the cold blue works real good for touch ups..just make sure you degrease/de-oil the metal first.

+1 on the Flitz. I use it on everything. It is non-abrasive and will also remove any traces of rust that might be building.

Old shooter, Did you ever get rid of the spots, if so, what worked?  Just like to keep a mental note for when it happens close to home!  It would never be me, my friend, neighbor.....
