wet clutch motor oil

I have a 1996 suzuki 250 quadrunner, it has a wet clutch, I am wondering if anyone has used regular motor oil as compared to motorcycle oil in your machine with wet clutch?   ???
 In the service manual it states to use 10w-40 and NOT to use any oil with friction reducer,as this will cause the clutch to slip,yet I have heard from some people they use shell rotilla, which has friction reducer in it,and they have no problem.

 What oil do you use in your ATV ?

Thanks for your advice on this matter.

I just bought a used 2004 Yamaha 660 Grizzly. The previous owner used Yamaha oil. I've contacted Mobil oil about using Mobil 1 0W-40 motor cycle in mine. My owner's manual also states do not use diesel rated oil or oils with friction reducers.

I have run automotive Mobil 1 In a Polaris Expedition 425 for 8 years with no clutch problems. The dealer told me he couldn't see a problem with using it and there have been none. I have a '80 HD Sportster bought new. Sportsters are hard on clutches. All I have ever run is 10-40 motor oil in the transmission like the manual says to do. No clutch slippage at all. In fact it still has the original clutch.

I put Mobil 1 in a Honda 300 and the dealer told me to take is out - so I did.  Never ran motorcycle oil in it.  It is 19 years old now and runs very good.

All I've ever used in my atvs is Shell Rotella 15-40.  I currently have a 2006 Yamaha Bruin and a 2008 kawasaki bayou. They both get Rotella.  Rotella is now Jaso certified and has the phosphorus in it to protect against extreme wear as the other atv oils.  Rotella even states on their website that Rotella can be used in wet clutch applications.  It's cheap too. $12 a gallon at Wally World.  The friction modifiers are found in the lower weight oils....5-30, 5-20, 10-30.  It is seldom found in diesel rated oil or 30wt.  Don't buy into the hype on motor oil.  My old Honda atc110 ran on Quaker State 10-40 for years....Never a problem and it still runs...It just belongs to my nephew now....

the friction reducer there no doubt talking about is the stuff you add to a posi rear end on a car or truck. Any oil of the proper weight should work in your bike.

I use mobil 1 in kodiak 400 wet clutch. Asked dealer if I had to buy the yamalube motor oil. He recomended mobil 1 due to less wear. This is an 01 with just over 18,000 miles, still runs as new. BTW you can run an upper end lubricant in the fuel like lucas oil offers to get by longer without valve adjustment. I have only had to have them adjusted once.That was at 1000 miles before using lucas. Engine is cooler on legs as well.
 I use my atv a lot for ranch work, just change oil twice a year and you will be fine. I also run redline racing water wetter in radiator. Anything you can do to reduce heat will prolong the life of the atv. One last tip get a solar battery charger like harbor freight offers and mount under front rack. I still have original battery. the $20 will save you $80 every few years for battery.

  Stupid Q but why not sue what's reccommend?  I knwo in my Triumph, I use what the factory uses and likewise reccommends.  Maybe it's me wnating the proper fluids and not seeing the little extra in costs for it as a big deal to keep the $8000 running properly.   If you didn't skimp on the machine, why do so on the fluids?

i never viewed using premium motor oil as skimping.  I thought the Honda oil was no better and much more expensive.  In my opinion it was developed for dealer profit and return visits to the dealership.  In other words, back up and bend over.

polaris pulls a real scam. My rzr is suppose to only be used with synthetic 0w50. Now try finding that anywhere but the polaris shop. Id bet a dime to a dollar that its just 5w50 in there bottle. I doubt there paying to have an oil specialy formulated to there specs for one machine.  Warantees good if you use any oil that weight but there is no others.

You'd be hard pressed to find any atv with a oil related engine problem now unless it was due to mechanical failure.  All manufacturers try to make you think you have to buy their own oil.  Heck, seadoo is the worst I've seen.  They require a special 2 stroke oil that only they have produced to the tune of $50 a gallon at the dealers.  It's a low ash non tw3 oil.   You can waste your money if you want to but cheap Rotella will work.  I don't care what dealers tell you, they won't be able to tell what type of oil you used even if they pull a sample, so don't worry about warranty.  Most oils sheer down in a matter of a couple of days of use. The Rotella will work and is better than the factory fill , jsut keep it changed.
