the foaming bore cleaner got me thinking...
« on: January 04, 2009, 10:18:41 AM »
i hate cleaning rods, and the patchworm in the best thing i have ever bought... i love it and its all i use on my sportster .17, and my centerfires, unless i am trying to get copper out.  then i have to go to the hated rod and start scrubbin.  i have never thought about the foaming cleaner until i read the post and was wondering, is it strong enough to spray in and wipe out with a patch worm and regular patch, and remove copper buildup without a wire brush?  if so, i believe i would be the happiest person on earth....
I've got to many but never enough!!!!

http://patchworm.com/patchworm.html  the patch worm, imo, is the "only" way to clean a .17, and a very convenient way to clean center fire rifles as well.

The Patch Worm is great! I have been using it for years. I use it for all
my Handi's, handguns, and anything that I shoot conventional ammo in.
For my milsurp rifles (Mosin Nagant, M39 Finn, Turk & Yugo 8mm Mausers)
that I use corrosive surplus ammo in I have to use the dreaded brush
and jags with patches. I also use a electronic unit that really works great
from Lovemyguns.com followed by a good scrubbing.

It works great on the copper fouling.  If it doesn't get it all the first time, squirt more in and go have some more refreshments, nap, whatever and go back later.  DP

Plain old Hoppes will work given time. You don't need anything that harsh. I have used Sweets which is loaded with ammonia and is very harsh but it does work with very bad cases of copper fouling. I usually just apply as much Hoppes #9 as I can get in the bore to the point where it's dripping. Then I set the gun down to drip onto an old rag. Two days later I'll repeat the process.
Be kind to your bore and it will be kind to you.

The foaming cleaners are not harsh at all. Nothing like Sweets or Butch's...They arent any more harsh than Hoppes, they just work about 3-5 times faster on carbon. It still usually takes an overnight soak to get all the copper, but it will get it out overnight. Hoppes #9 doesn't work on copper, regardless of how long you wait. You can wait days with Hoppes, and still go behind it with a better solvent and get copper out.
