handi chopper
« on: January 05, 2009, 04:34:00 AM »
my  45-70  Handi  is  now 16.5 inches in  the barrel
32 inches overall

crony results before  and  after same  gun  and  same box of ammo;
Georgia   arms ammo

22inch   405 grain  1278  and 1286 fps
            300 g     1879   and  1876

16.5 inch   405g    1210  and  1256  fps
                300g     1766  and 1754

looks  and  feels  good
no  noticeable increase  in muzzle  blast

didn't  shoot  enough  to determine accuracy  but  seemed  OK  [didn't  hit the crony]

this  16  inch should  be  a factor  offering

if  you  have  given  this  some  thought  yourself  i  do recommend  it

my  gunsmith  charged  $45  to  cut crown  and reinstall  sight
it  would  be cheaper  to  chop a scope ready barrel  with  no  sight  to deal with
i  will  not  scope  i  like  it  simple  and  small
balance  point  is  just forward  of trigger guard
and  right  where  the scope would be

Interesting info, could you tell us what load level each of these boxes of ammo were loaded too?  Trapdoor or higher?  The difference in the velocity loss between the 405 and 300 grain bullets is more than I would have expected.

I shoot a TC with a 16" barrel and must admit it has a lot of buck and recoil with the heavy loads.  Muzzle blast is way more than that of the BC.

factory  loads  so  i  assune  trap door

BC  HAS  TWICE    the barrel

it  does  seem  to jump a little  more

the  short  barrel  really  looks good with  the  longer BC forend  on  it
allmost a  manlicher stock

Yup, the BC is longer by twice and for my old eyes that extra sight radius helps a lot.

Thanks for the reply, I suspect your going to enjoy hunting with that short rifle, my TC has the youth stock so is extra short and really easy to carry.  I'm now wondering about the weight difference between the two short rifles.  The TC with plastic stocks and iron sights weighs just 4.5 lbs. unloaded.  If you get a chance it would be interesting to know what your rifle weighs now that you shortened it up.
