Anyone hunting with a Taurus Raging Bull?
« on: January 05, 2009, 06:43:49 AM »
I've been thinking about buying a double action 44mag that I could use for hunting and I keep seeing the Raging Bull series revolvers for reasonable prices.

I hesitate to buy any Taurus products because I've had two model 608 357 mag revolvers that needed repair work done to them.  Are the Raging Bull series guns any good?

I already reload for 44mag and that's the only cartridge I'd consider.  Any thoughts on a raging bull 44mag?

I am not a big Taurus fan at all, and I never liked the Raging Bulls.  I would rather have a Ruger Redhawk, or a Blackhawk, or a S&W 629. JMHO

I have an RB 8" 454 with a Holo sight on it. It's a great gun.
I have got 4 or 5 deer with it, two on the run.
I have a 29 and two 500's but use the RB the most.

I generally warn folks away from Taurus guns as quality is low and customer service is even worse. BUT I've yet to see a bad RB it seems to be the one Taurus that is a safe buy.

I do see from time to time those with RB here in NW Montana, but I like Bill and some others have shy'd away from Taurus.  I have had issues with other Taurus models, both mine and some others that are friends of mine.  That is why I got my S&W 629 6" as the grip feel was pretty much the same with the two, but I just went ahead with the one I got.

I practiced all year before the season and I got pretty good while sitting at the bench and taking the time before shooting.  But...in the real world...I carried mine this year and I was unable to sight-in the deer thru the 4x Weaver scope fast enough before the two (that I had a chance on) disappeared.  Both were under 100 yds.  Still, I had fun trying and there is always next year but I believe I will go with a small red-dot for a quicker response. ;D

I have one (see avatar) and it's been a good gun..... very smooth trigger pull and reasonably pleasant to shoot. No quality or function issues. Have an LG-35 dot on it and love the setup..... fast but no magnification. That said, I'm in the market for a Ruger SA to mount a conventional scope on for when I'm stand hunting over corn. Personally I'd keep the RB in the running as an option.

I have a blued rb in 44 mag and love the gun. not one hiccup with it and i have a lot of rounds thru it. I put the bushnell holo site on it and love this setup. fast and accurate. the trigger is great on the rb. while I am no expert on revolvers, I have friends with the super red hawks and while i like the looks of these guns they are harder to handle recoil then the ported barrel on the rb. I know some will say that the porting makes them too loud but the 44 mag is loud anyhow. the accuracy of my gun is outstanding and i hit the flat of a paperplate at 100 yrds, with this setup.
I will never part with mine.

Know what u mean on the scope, had a 6x on a contender had 8pt walk by at 15yds never could find and keep steady enough to get a shot off. Have a 2x on RB its much better but under low light still hard sometimes.

I had three Taurus hunting revolvers over the years. First was a 8" M44, killed a lot of deer with that one. Second was a 5" raging bull 454 that I could not hit anything with, the only thing I killed with it was a bull elk that I had shot with my rifle and he tried to get up when I approached him. Last was a 6" M44 that I killed one or two deer with. All of them had great triggers, 2 of them had excessive cylinder gap and would throw a fireball out of that gap using H110. If you are going to get one check out everything on it very thourally. If you can find a good one go for it, they are great guns. I finally settled on a 7.5" super redhawk 44, but I did have many problems with other super redhawks in the past but it kept calling to me. If I can find a really good 4" M44 Taurus I will buy it for hiking, (the two 4 inchers that the locall store had were a joke) so I passed. For now ;)

I foregot to add that the raging bull 454 was the nicest one out of all three.

I have two RB's one in 454 and one in 480 and love them both. I also have 17 HMR and 41 Ti in the tracker I just got a RB in the 218 BEE and that is giving me problems. Taurus has about the worst costermer service I have ever delt with. The 44 RB I shot was very accurate and my friend loves it, If you get one get the 454 I think you will have a better gun and better resale if you wish to move it later, J.Michael

8 hours walking pr. day - I feel that my FA 83/454/7,5" is like a mountain  :(.

Therefor I will hunt with my 629/4" this year   ;)

Is the RB heavier than my 83  ;)?

I have a scoped 6 1/2 in 480 Ruger RB and love it. I shoot a 370 grain cast and 350 grain JHP bullets and keep it zeroed at 100 yards. It is a hog killer supreme. Should be great in the 44 also but so are the others metioned above.

Good shooting,
Dave

I have 8" 454. Shot lots of rounds through it. No problems and very accurate. It "IS" kinda big to carry. I've found bandolier holster works best for me.

I have the 454 and have found it to shoot very well and it is extremely accurate. I have close to 500 full power rounds through it and about half that in standard loads if you can call a 260gr JHP or Cast Performance moving at 1850 fps standard.

I have not had any issues with it so far and everything still locks up good and tight. I am used to carrying big handguns so that isn't an issue for hunting with it. I use a Bianchi holster and carry it in cross draw fashion. It makes drawing and getting on target much faster with the longer barrel.

I would imagine that the 44 version would also be very suitable for hunting, however I would stick with the sights and forgo the scope. I shot a scoped Redhawk in 44 for several years and granted it shot great, I have done MUCH better with it since removing the scope. It helps out much more with the balance and quick acquisition of targets.

My only fault of the Taurus Raging Bull is the lack of sight options for them. The standard ones are a bit much for cutting a fine line at distance, but are great for anything 50yds and closer.

I used to have two taurus revolvers.  One was a RB in 41 mag.  This was a good gun and never gave me any trouble what so ever.

However the Ti 357 that I had gave me such a sour taste that I got rid of both.

I think, like others have said, that the Raging Bull line is subject to better quality control.  This does not mean that you will get decent warranty service.

I recommend a Smith & Wesson or Ruger.

Good Luck.

I have been striking out, but I have been keeping my eyes out for a Ruger Redhawk 5 1/2" or 4" 44mag.  It seems like when I have the $$ I can't find one, but when I probably shouldn't spend the $$ I see them.  I'm just being patient and waiting for the $$ and timing to come together.

I spent three years working as a parts man for a gunsmith.  Of all the 454 Mags shot, the Taurus had the least felt recoil.  But the size was just too big for guys with small to medium hands.  The Taurus were in for scope mounts by the way not repairs.

I shot a Wyoming antelope with my Raging Bull 41 magnum last Weekend.  The Raging Bull has one of the best factory trigger pulls I've had in a DA revolver.

RawhideKid---for small to med. size hand grip, you could try sanding the red cushion on the backstrap down close to even with the black of the grip.  That's what I had done and it worked out fine for me. ;D

I didn't mean because of the grip, although I can see why you would think that.  I felt like the guy on who framed Roger Rabbit with the hugh gun.  It is thier overall size that feels odd.  The Super Redhawks and S&W 500 and 460 are in the same boat! :-\
