The 98 Mauser action is more than strong enough for the 35 Whelan.  Your gunsmith should be able to tell you if the action is sound; that is, not cracked or bent and is safe to rebarrel.

The Turkish 8s sometimes had different barrel threads and I think some had a shorter barrel sleeve that took 96 Mauser threads, or some such.  The thread size is something the gunsmith will have to determine so that when he orders a 35 Whelan barrel for that action he gets the right one.  HTH.  Mikey.

The turk is a breed unto itself. I have found them with 96 thread, 98 thread, and 1 with thread in between those 2. But it is probably strong enough for a 35. I've seen several 8-06's made from them.

Most Turks have the small ring thread (.920"). This is'nt a problem unless you're looking for a pre-threaded short-chambered barrel, they only come chambered for low pressure calibers suitable for the small ring Mausers. They are actually stronger (if you want to split hairs) than the othere with the 1.1" thread since the inside of the reciever ring has more meat on it. If you are going with a barrel blank you are OK since the smith has to cut the barrel threads regardless.

I have a '03/38 Turk "K" action which I gather would originally have been chambered to 7.63x53 but was rebarrelled to 8x57 in 1938.
Unfortunately the guy I bought it off lost the magazine follower, the spring and the mag floor plate.
I have both of the action bolts and the trigger guard but without the follower and floor plate I'm kinda stuck.
Any help?

Kombi:  first, check our sponsor list for mil-surp parts dealers.  If none are listed then get up on the net and locate Gun Parts Corp./Numrich Arms, SAMCO or SARCO.  All three are major mil-surp parts dealers and finding a floorplate and spring for a 98 Mauser is no problem.  HTH and good luck.
