ARGH….
« on: January 05, 2009, 03:21:53 PM »
This little 17 sporter is going to make me crazy before I even get to pull the trigger. I ordered a cheap 6X compact scope and medium rings for it, they arrived today.  ;D

Rings are the right height, but with the rings and the scope as far back as they go, either my arms are too short, or the eye relief isn’t long enough. Now, either I need to get some seriously offset rings to move the scope back, or I need to find a longer scope.  >:(

All I wanted was a field-powered scope that isn’t so big that it doesn’t over power the diminutive size of this little rifle.

Well, I figured out the problem, never try to make a cheap scope do what you need a real scope to do!

I fixed the problem....Midway was having a sale.... ;D. Problem not is, I have to wait again.

The book"Varmint and Small Game Cartridges and Rifles" published by Wolfe has an article by Paul Mathews citing that he used a single ring for a Weaver 2.5 scope mounted on a Ruger #3 22 Hornet. I've used a single ring for years on a couple of 22's to get correct eye relief. No issues yet. Some one flame me for using Paul Mathews method or I won't feel loved!

Great, now there's another book I'm gonna have to get.... ;)

I  moved the single ring as far back as it would go, slid the scope back as far as it would go, and now the sight picture is perfect. The ring is about 5/8" front to back, may just provide enough support by itself. Too bad I ordered that new 6.5-20X scope last night, what ever will I do with it?  ;D
