Stop that annoying double tap help please?
« on: January 06, 2009, 05:52:03 AM »
I have two Ar rifles.
One a Stag 24" s.s. decked out , shoots great, a true groundhog assult rifle.
Works everytime like it should.
At a show I bought a Pac West Arms standard AR15.
No bells and whistles just an ordinary Viet Nam area looking Ar.
It show vertually NO wear, bore is bright and crisp.
Troubl is to goes band, bang, double tap, bang, etc.
Pretty hard to target shoot with the thing.
I loaded mags one round at a time till I got her dialed in at 50 shooting sub m o a, so she's a shooter but that double tap crap has got to go.
How does one fix that.
And NO I'm not buying another rifle.
I just want this one to work like it should.
Can you ehlp?
New parts of some sort needed?
What?

I don't know if you're a do-it-yourself at home gunsmith type or not, but I would definitely take this rifle to a professional gunsmith.  I try to be a do-it-yourself at home gunsmith when I can be, but this would be a case where I think it would be wise to take it to a professional.  If nothing else just to keep yourself legal.

Before I took it to the gunsmith I would probably take a look at the trigger parts first.  That'd be my guess as to why you're getting two round bursts.  A new trigger could be fairly cheap or very expensive depending on what direction you wanted to go.

Give us an update when you get this resolved.

Most of the time this is caused by the firing pin.
The FN 2000 i had did this and there was a recall on them.
The firing pin is to heavy , being that it is a Millitary Rifle Pin , and when the bolt slams shut it has sufficient weight to fire the thinner primers.
I would first try an after market AR Oin and i bet that stops this.
Be careful posting on this ,an Air Force Airman had an SKS that did this and he was arrested for it ,the NRA had to defend him in court over it.
He won the case ,but look at all the hassle he had to go through.

No big deal jaeger. Just a worn trigger/sear. They just temper them at the very end instead of the whole part. So they wear out with shooting.

Since you are going to have it apart anyway you may want to put some reduced poundage springs in there. Just to make the trigger more like your other AR.
http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=579878

Take the pistol grip off. Take out the spring and stud from safety. Remove Safety. Take upper off. Let tention off of sear by pulling trigger with thumb on sear to let it slowly come forward. Pop two pins out of trigger group. Remove sear first. Remove trigger and disconnect. Apply the trhee springs to trigger group. Install trigger  and disconect back in lower. Then Sear.

Any question PM me.

Sorry Planx, didn't see your post. I have never encountered it, but you could be right and it would be a cheaper fix. Stands to reason it could get bent, bind in the bolt and set one off at chambering.

The bulk of replies I posted on another forum sais bent firing pin.
I took it out, chucked it in a variable speed drill on slow and it really wobbles.
I rolled it on a glass counter top and you can see a bend in it.
This, I'm told, is not so uncommon a problem.
I'll look at the sear and trigger but after I put a new firing pin in it.
Oh, and the other guys on the other forum didn't try those bull$hit scare tactics about a guy with a broken gun going to the federal pokey either.
Whoooooooooo-boy.
But just to be sae now that I don't trust a couple of you clowns I'll keep the weapon disassembled till I get a new firing pin.
And it is Bull$hit.
I worked for YEARS with the Cleveland unit of the BATF and they would NEVER arrest a guy because his gun broke at the range.
For those with the plausable answers, THANKS!

Slam fires are usually the firing pins.
In fact FNH told me most all double taps are caused by the pins.

You can believe or disbelieve as you wish but the fact is there has been a fellow made an example of in the last year or so for just this thing. I think the NRA is trying to get him out but he did do time for it.

im sure if your gun failed and it happened you wouldnt get arrested but if you then go out and try it again knowing it happens your firing a full auto weapon and will no doubt be prosecuted for it. I would get the hammer and trigger parts out of it till it can be repaired. At least that shows you have an intention to fix it. ive got a buddy who knows first hand how gently the batf treats people suspected of holding a full auto weapon. They can crash into your house and turn it and your life upside down with no more then hearsay proof. If i were you id even delete this post and any ohters you have on this subject and imediately get that gun back to the manufacture.

For a good time Google "John Glover FAL ATF" without the quotes.  No, jeager106, our government would never do anything like that...

Got and installed new firing pin.
Ran 30 rounds without issue.
Thing is quite accurate.
Sub m.o.a. at 50 with peep sights.
Also ordered spare firing pin and springs prone to break of get "lost".
Thanks again for all your help. It's much appreciated.

He fiddled with the sear in the hopes of better trigger , when it started to chain fire, he left it, and talked about it. The reciever was found to have full auto parts in it, and he had other issues.  Dumbass maybe, but not a "victim".

The new administration will probably try to have you arrested if it goes tap, much less tap, tap.

glad you got it right! If you want to have some legal fun go to you tube and search for slam firing.
